You've hinted at the difference - beamwidth and directivity. As you increase gain the beamwidth narrows. In the case of a vertical antenna like that means you want to see the main lobe(s) of energy flatten towards the horizon. This is a very simple simulation run comparing a generic 1/2λ...

    Splicing WeBoost cable?

You can't really splice coax like it's battery cable. I mean, you can sort of if you know what you're doing. But terminating the two ends you want to join with connectors is far more reliable mechanically and electrically. LMR-195 (which is similar to RG-58 coax) and SMA connectors seem...

Petitions for Reconsideration of Part 95 Personal Radio Services Rules Report and Order

The club I'm in just started standardizing on GMRS/FRS literally last month hopefully to bring order to the chaotic entropy of FRS, CBs and hams. FM CB might have a place but my feeling is that ship has sailed and ain't coming back to port. It's an interesting thought but who's going to buy...

Petitions for Reconsideration of Part 95 Personal Radio Services Rules Report and Order

GMRS is clogged so we're moving to FM CB. This sounds like a done deal, yes on all requests. FM on 27 MHz CB, automatic and periodic location on FRS/GMRS (I think that means MIC-E APRS basically) and a MedRadio change.

Will this radio transmit on GMRS frequencies?

This is true, FCC ID is T4K-779UV, granted for Part 95E. Doing this negates the above statement. It might be true that it can be modified to work on ham bands and, if so, then it would be fine to use it there but it would make it no longer legal on GMRS.

yaseu FT-857D owners. Can you answer this?

This is true, FCC ID is T4K-779UV, granted for Part 95E. Doing this negates the above statement. It might be true that it can be modified to work on ham bands and, if so, then it would be fine to use it there but it would make it no longer legal on GMRS. I also fail to see how this is...

FWIW don't necessarily limit yourself to a couple of antenna choices. There's nothing magical about GMRS. It's UHF still and just slightly higher than the 70cm ham band so you might even have an old ham antenna that will work. Some of them even have enough bandwidth to cover both the upper...

Recommend a great, not just good, first aid kit.

Travis Hurley runs a company called Outer Limit Supply. He happens to be member of the Rising Sun 4WD Club and paramedic so has a good idea or two about 4WD first aid kits. He gets to many of the events around, Cruise Moab, Overland Expos, Easter Jeep Safari to see them in person...

    Arizona is on FIRE!

We've had a couple of dry years here in Grand Junction but that's of course just one data point. But the drought is pervasive in the Colorado River basin. This year has seen about 3 million acre-feet inflow, which is 18% of the Compact assumption (16.5 million total including 1.5 million...

    New to GPS

What @pluton says. Or verify that the iPad is in fact cellular. If it's WiFi-only it won't have built-in GPS.

    New to GPS

The benefit of Gaia is really found when you do the upfront work, whether on the iPad or a regular PC. That's where you research places and set up waypoints, tracks and routes. The vehicle-side while in motion is just following what you have build ahead of time. Gaia does do auto routing in...

Starter Comms — What should I get for basic comms to let me start joining group runs, etc?

It's a regional thing I'm sure. CB is quiet around here for the most part on the Interstate. I've actually talked to more OTR drivers on amateur radio than CB over the past year or two. That's not to say it's been a lot or anything but it seems a handful got their ham tickets to actually have...

Starter Comms — What should I get for basic comms to let me start joining group runs, etc?

Use CB or don't. It makes no difference to me. It boils down to use what the people you need to talk to are all using. It must be that no one around here has dads, uncles, grandpas because the question is always "what radio do I buy?" Which is followed by "How do I mount an antenna?" Since...

Starter Comms — What should I get for basic comms to let me start joining group runs, etc?

The cost is a factor but so is maintaining the radios. Eventually any group that's attracting new members has to decide to keep recommending CB or convince existing users to use FRS. Finding a CB is getting harder without Radio Shacks around or even many truck stops. You can get FRS radios at...

Understanding amp hours and lithium batteries

This isn't understanding current flow? From FAA-H-8083-15B. I'm not a pilot but isn't this the handbook you'd use training to get an instrument rating?

Understanding amp hours and lithium batteries

I'm not defending A-hr as the best unit of measure, just saying that since just about every car, boat or plane at one time had an ammeter along with sometimes a voltmeter indicating an acceptable range knowing amp-hours is a familiar carry over. Watching the rate of electron flow in and out is...

Understanding amp hours and lithium batteries

I've never really thought about it but you're right. Maybe it's because of the use of ammeters and thus Coulomb counting to stick with it as a base unit?

Don't Everyone Jump On This At Once

The market is distorted compared to historical norms right now. It's always been more or less accepted that you can't get back out the cost for modifications to your truck compared to stock used. Usually the recommendation was to remove the mods you could to sell individually. Today that may...

    Looking for air compressor input

That's a sweet filter. I know I should do something better than running an air muffler as an intake filter. Just what I had in the junk box to replace the original plastic and foam job. I had a couple of those sintered mufflers from a previous axle breather project and they were 1/8NPT ready...

integrated compact truck in the us

Well there you go. Mine was an RN110 (even so stamped on the frame rail, complete model was RN110L-CRMDEA - 22R-E, W56, XtraCab, DLX trim) so 2,520 kg = 5,556 lbs. That 2,730 kg = 6,018 lbs. So it's a little higher but not 3,000 kg that I thought. In a move somewhere along the way I lost the...
