I have never had a puncture or damaged a sidewall while running 40-45 psi. I did several when I aired down to 20.
This sidewall failure is clearly not a blowout, but a flexed sidewall cut on a protruding rock or ledge.

We also used to dip in Hot Creek - but things have changed dramatically after a few small earthquakes in the area. The area in the creek (the Northern shore, right near the blue cauldron-like place) where people used to warm themselves up became very hot. I believe couple of people scalded...

Burns Canyon Road leads to Big Bear Lake area - a good easy/moderate four wheel drive trail. There are some side "excursions" looping back to Burns Canyon Rd - some may be bad enough to turn a weekend into an "adventure." Also, trails 1N01 and 1N04 split off that road and end at Hwy.38 near 8000...
Funny that I should come across this thread while thinking lazily of where I should go to Anza Borrego on Saturday... Dos Cabesas Road and Jojoba Canyon are on my list.
