    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

I did a bit more research and it looks like the solution is to add spacers to the chassis mount so the bar drops. If you keep it at the stock mount you put the bar under too much stress with a lifted truck. This will cause the bar to bind and will bust the ball joints, like you see in my photo...

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

Hey man, been a minute! To me, it looks like the stock sway bar isn't adequate to support a lifted Disco. This happened with it only being driven to work and, as you've seen, all of the parts were new and the torque values precisely set to what is in the RAVE manual. This is now the second time...

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

Spent the day finally catching up with some long-needed work on the truck. Began by readjusting the tie rod ends to straighten the steering wheel. This was surprisingly easy. The hardest part was keeping the bar from moving while tightening the lock nut. While I was there, I relocated the...

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

Been a while. I've not had much time to work on the truck, but i've been slowly replacing bits here and there. The interior paneling is all moldy. This is really frustrating since the truck was sold to me as "one of the nicest examples of a D1"... I've slowly begun ripping it all out and plan...

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

Yep, RHD! My longer trips are usually 5 days or so. I don't have any intention of doing massive trips down to South America, but a long trip through Baja or through Canada and Alaska would definitely be in the plans. As for the poptop, im going to go with Campteq. My buddy has a manual HDJ81...

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

I finally got ahold of a fuel pump plate, but it was fairly rusty so I stripped it and painted it. I also added some foam tape to the bottom to help it seal against the tub. Then there was the bad wiper relay, which is now replaced. Not too hard to tell which one is the replacement. For a...

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

My brother sold his FJ Cruiser and donated a few items to me so I thought i'd toss his Factor 55 hitch onto the truck. Doesn't look too bad! In other news, finally an update on my HDJ81. It's been 2 years, but the engine is finally back in. No, I didn't do the work, which is why it has taken...

Thanks man! It has come a long way, but im building it to use it. No plans to thrash it, it'll be used for lighter trips while the Cruiser will be used for the longer, more challenging ones. Truth be told, it still needs some cosmetic work, but it sure does look good in photos!

It's the little things that count. Threw this metal badge on today and it really brings the whole front of the vehicle together. I also replaced the indicator lights in the front with a pair from Britpart. Looking much better. I think the OEM lights are a bit more orange, but im digging...

Haha, it's a grille for Discovery 1. They were only sold in the Middle East as a "Hot Climate" package. They are super rare and in high demand from people who obsess over their Rovers. I dont know if the D2s got them, worth checking though!

Well, 2023 is off to a good start. I managed to acquire 2 brand new in box OEM Saudi grilles. I really like how the mesh is mounted to the plastic frame.

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

The truck is running better than ever. Finally got it outside to stretch a bit and it performed extraordinarily well. The suspension is smooth and responsive and there weren't any alarming issues. I did notice a new oil leak that appears to be coming from the oil cooler line just behind the...

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

Got the truck back today and it runs smoother than ever. A bit more work was done than expected, but I figured it's better to take care of anything that looks suspect while we're in there. West Coast Rovers did a great job in a short period of time. While I try to do most of my own work, WCR is...

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

So far so good. Nothing slipped and I hadn't noticed any issues with the engine other than the coolant leak at the head gasket. I never overheated it. Awesome! The D2 will be more comfortable and have more power, but honestly, I love the looks of the D1 more so thats why I ended up with 2 ;)

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

Couple of fun notes on the engine rebuild: While the engine had been "regasketed" 2 owners back (allegedly), it appears they never bothered to machine the heads despite the engine having overheated several times. The engine has been heli-coiled and there was some damage done to the block. At...

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

Just a quick update... Well, it turns out it was, in fact, the headgasket. It's shot. So im having West Coast Rovers do the top end rebuild since I don't have the time or the space to take it on. We'll deck the heads, evaluate whether it needs a valve job, and then take a look at the cam. If...

    Casper & Outono - 2x 1998 Discovery 1 Builds

I have a pretty good kit that I can repair most things with on the trail; and i've done just that on a few vehicles of mine. In one trip alone, I had a blown coolant line and a burned out alternator on my LR3- both fixed while on the road. The D1 probably could have made the trip and even if...
