    Ammo Can Campfire

I wonder what the various land managers would classify it. Is it an open fire, candle or stove? The fire restrictions in the Colorado BLM districts read as follows. Stage 1: "Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire or campfire except within agency-provided fire grates at developed...

What's your thoughts on bike and component weight?

"The guy" is Andy Hampsten in the 1988 Giro, when he ended up in the pink jersey. The Gavia climbing stage that year is considered a real epic in bike racing. https://pezcyclingnews.com/latestnews/gavia-1988-andy-hampstens-epic-stage/ Love those crazy TT bikes, though! That year his road...

What's your thoughts on bike and component weight?

Remember that one time at band camp? Well, except they were Serrotas. But who's nitpicking?

    Best 4Runner Under 8K? late 90s, early 2000s?

Yup. Flights are cheap now, I'd highly suggest fishing Craiglist and getting a one-way to Phoenix, Albuquerque, San Antonio or perhaps San Diego. Toyotas are common in the West and they'll be minimally rusted in those places. The only thing you have to watch is a fair number of trucks will be...

    Best 4Runner Under 8K? late 90s, early 2000s?

I don't know that there's a perfect year per say. All 4Runners are pretty well built and all will have a gotcha or whatever. My $0.02 would be to buy the newest and lowest mileage basic SR5 you can find for your budget. Personally I think the 4th gen (2003-2009) is going to be the best value...

When did mountain biking become so specialized!

People have been riding drop bars on mountain bikes since the clunker days. Technical is the reason flat bars exist, not a lot different than dirt bikes in a sense. Multiple hand positions is the advantage for drops. But you'll see on cyclcrocross and gravel some people have mid levers to get...

When did mountain biking become so specialized!

I run a 710 mm wide, 9° sweep, +/- 5 mm drop bar (it's a Niner RDO flat top). If I run them with bar ends those put my palms at roughly 730 mm. I ride only single speed MTB. I don't find the extra width with my hands turned knuckles forward as useful and it's actually painful over time at the...

When did mountain biking become so specialized!

There's nothing that says a 29'er needs the ultra wide bars that are in vogue now. You should fit the bike to you, which means stem length and rise, seat post height, saddle tilt and aft/fore position, bar width, sweep, rotation. There's professionals who will do a comprehensive fit this for a...

Didn't see you extrapolated. My mistake.

When did mountain biking become so specialized!

He's of course generalizing. Still having the capability because an enduro requires it nominally isn't the same as being good at it. Most people would say this: would be a poor choice faced with profiles like these: But most people would probably be equally aghast to use a hard tail one...

Which Taco for AT Overland build?

I don't believe the TRD Offroad is worth the money in this case. Since the upfront understanding is it won't remain stock then the TRD package is mostly not relevant. You will want to rework the suspension for the weight so the progressive shocks and spring rates Toyota uses are replaced...

Chirp with Kenwood TM-D710G on Linux +APRS

I only have very old RT Systems (like version 3) applications that IIRC had to be done importing them in CSV or XLS files or the ARRL TravelPlus CD-ROM (that's how old mine are!). By now surely they'd integrate the ability to read them from online databases.

Chirp with Kenwood TM-D710G on Linux +APRS

That's the beauty of Chirp, it connects to several common databases, Repeaterbook (for ham), Radio Reference (for others), etc. so it can populate the file for you. The DBs can't tell you which ones are active but at least you can fill the file easily. Look under Radio->Import from data...

GMRS antennae needed - MXT115 Midland Micromobile

This is what the MXT115 antenna Midland includes looks like on the web page. A replacement whip should be cheap. You might call Midland and ask, they might just give you one. If not ask them the diameter and length then find something in the scrap metal or hardware store, perhaps a length...

I am convinced that those who use tire tubes, just enjoy getting flats and fixing them...

You're right, one solution surely must fit all. Riding daily in Portland, OR, must be exactly like riding daily in the desert of western Colorado, eastern Utah, what with single digit humidity and triple digit summer and subzero winters. It's 10% relative humidity here at our house right now...

I am convinced that those who use tire tubes, just enjoy getting flats and fixing them...

I run tubeless but still carry a tube and have had to use it a handful fo times, flats (sealant dries out quickly here), torn sidewall, dented rim. No two riders' outfits must be the same because the conditions and uses aren't the same.

    Engel fridge review

I’ve had a plain Jane Engel mt45 running 24/7/365 since 2007. On the mains at home when not in the truck. I get about 36F at 1.5 on the dial. Best money spent ever on camping stuff.

    2020 Tacoma 4 cylinder

If I could go back to 2015 and do it over I'd have bought a 4 cylinder/5 speed instead. That's mostly since the 6 speed stick they used from 2005-2015 is not good. But in 2020 I think I'd go with a V6. The main reason being I don't think Toyota trucks with 4 cylinders are well matched with...

Questions for SolidWorks Users and/or Engineering Graduates

FWIW the MEs who I worked with had just gotten new machines: Dell Precision 5820 workstations, quad core W2223 Xeons, 32GB, Nvidia P2200, 500GB drive, dual 27" 2560 x 1440 Dell monitors. Overkill for a student, though. I earned my EE degree from the Univ. of Colorado but things are radically...
