HELP: I Bought an Overweight Overlander

LOL, I have Energy Suspension radiator core supports and my left size inner fender is still drooping from the weight of a dual group 25/35 in the stock location. Thats yet another known issue, the sheet metal starting to fatigue and tear from the battery weight. But that's been true for...

HELP: I Bought an Overweight Overlander

I'm neither defending Chris or attacking you, but in this case the truck is a lot overload (at least 20% to 25% over GVWR) and well used. Rear axles and diffs on Tacoma are not an unusual issue and the transmission failure probably was the misdiagnosis, those are not generally known to be a...

    Garmin inReach for Papua Backcountry

If I was guessing Garmin being Garmin it's simply product line decision. If you want one physical device and not have a GPS receiver Garmin isn't going to let you get away cheap. Their traditional bread-and-butter is GPS receivers and maps. That's a significant reason I stick with SPOT, I...

    Garmin inReach for Papua Backcountry

The Mini has had some firmware updates to fix issues. I know some people like them but I've heard of enough problems that I've been holding off considering one. The larger InReach devices have a solid reputation with plenty of history, I'd have no issue with those if two-way was desired (I...

    That's a sheep wagon!

What Order of Upgrades Would You Make

Just an opinion like you were asking for. Anyway my point would have been then that CBI and Detroit Locker probably have no support in Africa. A steel bumper isn't a big deal, welding is welding. But I'd stick with stock diffs. OME/ARB is globally available and doesn't seem to have been an...

    Increasing Tacoma's GVWR

My belief is that Toyota defines a platform based on the chief engineer. How much leeway they are given I have no idea, though.

    Increasing Tacoma's GVWR

Yeah, that's tongue in cheek. The 70 series would sell in the tens annually here. A fair chunk of people that want them already have them either using the over 25 year rule (in the U.S.) or truly off highway use in mines. The market for commercial is nonexistent, whatever market there is for...

    Increasing Tacoma's GVWR

Toyota has a lot of platforms already so I see from a global and corporate position the need to get things converged. When you think about it there's the 200 series, the 78/79 series, the real 150 series Prado and GX, IMV Hilux, 150-derived 4Runner and then the Tundra is forked from 200 series...

    Increasing Tacoma's GVWR

The Tundra and Tacoma are already assembled on the same line in San Antonio. So if that's the intention they already have done that. Although Toyota still considers them two platforms at the moment...

What Order of Upgrades Would You Make

Not knowing anything firsthand about Africa it seems to me you'd want it to be as stock as possible. A highly customized vehicle is going to make any repair much harder than it already will be. So any modification needs to be understood well by either you or the mechanic.

    Increasing Tacoma's GVWR

You know, the clearly simple answer here is just to sell the Hilux and 70 series here, too. Duh. One is a lifestyle truck, the other is a work truck.

    Increasing Tacoma's GVWR

None of it makes sense. The Tundra is already loosely based on the 200 series Cruiser, at least they share parts. So I don't see how moving the Tacoma up from the Prado/GX/4Runner and Hilux/IMV association or moving the Tundra down can end up with much shared between the two. Maybe it would...

    Increasing Tacoma's GVWR

The 4th gen is a bellwether to me since that's likely the Tacoma I'll be looking at to replace mine. If the Ranger didn't come back I'd be in the same situation, though, buying a Toyota because that's just what I do. But it did and from what I see the design assumptions better suit me. The...

    Increasing Tacoma's GVWR

The shortest Hilux life span was 4 years (1984-1988) and the longest 11 years (2004-2015), so I don't think any conclusion can really be gleaned. The last couple of generations have been about a decade and the Prado/4Runner/GX/150 platform started in 2009 so *probably* the next revision will be...

HELP: I Bought an Overweight Overlander

That's a completely different situation. The 1st gen Tacoma lower BJ design was fundamentally flawed and was changed on the 2nd gen. The LBJ is no longer in tension so if it fails it collapses instead of separates. It is critical that 1st gen Taco owners stay on top of them and it's generally...

    Increasing Tacoma's GVWR

Mid-cycle for which? The current Hilux was introduced in 2015 and the Tacoma in 2016 so they are essentially already product cycle sync'd. I think the 3rd gen Tacoma was a rushed product not terribly different than the new U.S. Ranger, sort of space fillers until a significant generational...

    Increasing Tacoma's GVWR

I think there's a more than zero chance the 4th gen Tacoma merges with the Hilux in some non-trivial ways. There's been talk of moving all Tacoma production to Mexico and Toyota likes when factories can build models for multiple markets. I can't imagine they'll ever give up the Tacoma brand...

HELP: I Bought an Overweight Overlander

To be honest the V6/8" has always been marginal in the 05+ Tacoma even not overweight. The 95-15 trucks without e-lockers got a better axle where Toyota added a bearing cap girdle and 12-bolt ring gear. If you are willing to give up the factory locker using an axle from a plain SR 4-cylinder...
