Will this radio transmit on GMRS frequencies?

Another reason I think people who mix and match sound bad and create interference @Frdmskr has to do with not understanding when to use 12.5KHz, 20KHz and 25KHz bandwidth on which channels. FRS is like just about every other service except GMRS and ham in being narrowband all the time. On the...

Basic Dual Battery Setup to run Fridge/Freezer questions (sorry in advance if these are dumb)

LOL. https://www.dictionary.com/browse/stuff I've kind of always felt working within factory fuseboxes qualified.

Basic Dual Battery Setup to run Fridge/Freezer questions (sorry in advance if these are dumb)

It's just inserting a diode drop in the voltage sense, so should work with any externally sensed alternator. Seems like it would be true of most Japanese brands and doesn't Fiat-Chrysler use Denso alternators, for example? It's just that Toyota named the fuse "ALT-S" (e.g. alternator sense) in...

Basic Dual Battery Setup to run Fridge/Freezer questions (sorry in advance if these are dumb)

Thet are stuffing a diode in the voltage sense line and forcing their alternators to bump proportionally. I think it's about the worst hack you can do without monitoring and knowing why and how. It'll take a stock system such as my Tacoma and they'll run >14V even at idle and near 15V at RPM...

Basic Dual Battery Setup to run Fridge/Freezer questions (sorry in advance if these are dumb)

You can measure in many places and get useful numbers but at the battery terminals is the best place since that's where it really matters.

Basic Dual Battery Setup to run Fridge/Freezer questions (sorry in advance if these are dumb)

It's not the deep discharge it's that vehicle charging systems are designed for flooded lead acid and usually charge at too low of a voltage. As a result AGM batteries are often chronically under charged and lose capacity over time. I personally run a pair of Odyssey and haven't modified my...

Older GPS? Keep an eye on it in April 2019

I just came across an issue with a couple of Garmin GPS-18x LVC pucks reporting date as January 2000 instead of August 2019. Fixed with a firmware update (current is 4.20 released March 21, 2019).

    1976 FJ40 barn find.

I think it has a 5-digit odometer so that might be taken with a grain of salt. Depending on how long it was used that could be 362k miles, too. But no matter, it's almost always worth saving an FJ40. They aren't making any more of them after all. If the frame isn't toast and the rest is...

my experience with GMRS so far

Ground planes and counterpoises are used interchangeably in casual conversion but none the less your intuition that having an artificial ground plane will impact the radiation pattern is correct. This was taken from Antenna Theory (2nd Edition) by Constantine Balanis, originally in the chapter...

Antenna advice with alum skin veh

One thing to remember is having a low SWR measurement does not automatically mean you have assembled a highly functional antenna. A resistor presents a perfect load and will measure an almost perfect 1:1. But this only means no RF is reflected not that all that RF was radiated. In the case...

    Garmin Overlander

Yes, that's what I mean. Garmin doesn't make their format for their maps public but there are hackers who figured the basics out, that's the old cGPSmapper ad MapTk tools, and now mkgmap for OSM.

How can I restore this massive cargo box to it's former glory?

Once the gelcoat is oxidized I figure there's no reason to worry about using a light polishing compound like the 3M stuff I mentioned. I mean a gelcoat that's 25+ years old exposed to the UV here in Colorado isn't going to last forever even if a fella was absolutely OCD about waxing anyway...

    HAM Operators- Post up here

Absolutely true! Congrats @colodak on passing. And something to keep in mind, as discomforting as it might be, is that someone had to just squeak by in everything. For every doctor who was top of his or her class there was one who was at the bottom and did adequately. He or she is still a...

How can I restore this massive cargo box to it's former glory?

That's the use for it IMO - first coat sprayed in after the release into the mold. I'd use for spot repairs perhaps for not for a total re-coat. To clean up the gelcoat on my WilderNest I use 3M 9006, which you should be able to find or at least order though paint suppliers. It's very...

Older Edgestar Fridge w/out low voltage cutoff...anyone add an external one??

I had a battery break, physically break. The post apparently developed a crack that had it making intermittent contact with the grid inside. It appeared like a failed cell since the voltage would settle to about 9V and when the fridge would kick on the voltage would drop to 3 or 4 volts, which...

    Garmin Overlander

I've only used Garmin's typical handheld receivers but I think the interface is fine. Yup, it's not Android or iOS but what I need is there and easy to use. But my comparison is using a phone-sized device with small virtual buttons working a cascade of menus. The screen on my GPSMaps 78 is...

Older Edgestar Fridge w/out low voltage cutoff...anyone add an external one??

I would say a low voltage disconnect is more like a rev limiter for your engine or fuses for your cables. Most of the time you never notice but if you do something extraordinary (or stupid) it keeps you from doing more damage. We all eventually hit a limit to how much space and money we have...

Two-Wheel Drive Ford Ranger's New $595 Off-Road Pkg Is Touted as a “Hell of a Deal”

Just thought too that I can't remember a situation I've ever wished I didn't have 4WD, so I'm certainly not suggesting 2WD is better. Just saying that 2WD should be seen as an absolutely threshold because it can work fine if you have clearance and weight over the drive axle. Now there have...

Two-Wheel Drive Ford Ranger's New $595 Off-Road Pkg Is Touted as a “Hell of a Deal”

There's always corner cases. I did say 4WD >> 2WD general. I'm also the guy using 4WD high a lot and use low range as much as possible. It's less stress on the drivetrain, less tire slip. Of course you're correct and I don't disagree. Just saying that taking a differential out of the...

Two-Wheel Drive Ford Ranger's New $595 Off-Road Pkg Is Touted as a “Hell of a Deal”

Steering traction is a distinct difference between 2WD and 4WD, that's for sure. It's not always an advantage to have driving traction coupled with steering, though.
