Basic recovery gear for full size?

Yes, good chance most of it is still fine.

    Animal strikes and brush bars

Can't say about Chicago but I rear ended another car with an ARB on my old truck and my insurance company didn't blink. Actually paid me to replace the ARB. It did cause us to loose our accident-free discount, though. This is what it looks like when an ARB bumper end up looking like when it...

How to keep your water from freezing ?

It takes 8.34 BTU per gallon to raise water 1°F, which is about 2.45 W-hr. He's in relatively mild Tennessee and hasn't said duration. For extending the shoulder season a month or two it wouldn't have to be a great deal of heat.

They make RV water tank heaters. https://www.ultraheat.com/ultraheat-am-model-0900

Map: Is this area too steep for GMRS?

It's pretty common for the ceramic filters to fail. That's actually true of many (most I'd even say) radios built in the last 20 years. In this case miniaturization isn't ideal, they are fairly delicate and don't like vibration and heat. That's probably all it is. It'll be a sad day when WWV...

That TS2000 shouldn't be all that bad, it's rated 0.25 μV 12dB SINAD on 144-148 FM. When the ARRL tested the TS2000 they found it to be 0.182 μV at 146.0 MHz using the pre-amp and normal bandwidth and 0.2 μV using wide bandwidth, so Kenwood's being conservative in their specs. A TM-V71 is 0.16...

Map: Is this area too steep for GMRS?

It's generally true to call VHF 30 to 300 MHz. But EM fields don't always follow our arbitrary definitions. CB was put where it was because at the time it was "very high" relatively. Also at the time 150 MHz was "ultra high", thus why they called the PL259 a "UHF" connector, the limit of its...

Map: Is this area too steep for GMRS?

It is a hasty RF coverage map. I used the GPS coordinates in the post and assumed 5 watt TX with 2.13 dBi antenna gain on both TX & RX. I assumed 0.5uV receive minimum sensitivity I think. Height of 2m over ground on both antennas. There's several software packages and sites to do them. FCC...

Map: Is this area too steep for GMRS?

CB isn't HF, it's low band VHF for propagation. You can sometimes find it experiences tropospheric ducting but it's not skip in the same sense as HF.

Topology and line of sight make all the difference, especially with UHF.

    BFG KM3 road pressure

I run about 40 psi in 235/85R16 (E-rated) on a mildly built 2008 Tacoma. The chalk test and wear pattern is key. It's a little stiff but if I go lower it tends to cup the outer lugs.

Tire size recommendation for lifted Tacoma? "Skinny" or "normal"?

The tires are pretty narrow and the track width of a 2nd gen Tacoma is 63", so I find they are fairly eager to find wear patterns in the road which might be mistaken for alignment issues.

    Clutch’s deep thoughts thread...

Been around on and off for 13 years and that spans two very similar trucks and the same WilderNest. No build threads, a few photos here and there either. I've never really felt in touch with what I think is the typical "ExPoer", since I don't have an overland 4x4 Isuzu cab-over and it has...

    Clutch’s deep thoughts thread...

I'd call it slightly elitist. Every trip had to be a campaign, like we're all going on mini Roald Amundsen expeditions or Livingstone or Stanley crossing Africa.

    Bike racks

They ARE everywhere! We have two, neighbor across street has one, three doors down, too. I get it though, they work well, made in Wisconsin, the design is flexible and you can repair or upgrade one made in 2001 just the same as one made in 2019.

    Clutch’s deep thoughts thread...

'Cause he (or she, never met personally) grooves to his/her own soundtrack. I sympathize. The last time the vibe here was getting tilted. That was the early days when uber expensive campaign chairs and titanium sporks has just begun to infiltrate the ranks.

Photos of mid-sized vehicles - Post Here

I mentioned this in another thread about this frame, maybe this one, I dunno. People look at the GVWR and towing capacity and think that means a truck will do that under all conditions and that's false. It can achieve the ratings under the conditions assumed during design and testing. IOW...

Perfect off-highway tire = LTX? What?

Scott may not be competing at KOH with his 100 but he's no mall crawler. His testimonial is the real deal. The only argument I might forward is what works exceptionally well on a 100 series Land Cruiser might not translate well to a general statement. I've seen 100s and 200s do some things...

Photos of mid-sized vehicles - Post Here

The tongue weight won't necessarily increase. It depends on the geometry, though. The weight of the trailer is still it's center of mass relative to Earth, the tongue and its axle. Even airborne the truck doesn't necessarily see the trailer weight through the tongue. It might if it was 90...

Tire size recommendation for lifted Tacoma? "Skinny" or "normal"?

I run 235/85R16 BFG KO2. They get the job done. I have them mounted on standard 16x7 2nd gen spare steel wheels with the oval hole. My $0.02 is they are tucked a little too far in visually with the flares but it does help with thrown debris. I have a set of 3rd gen 4Runner 16x7 5-spoke...
