Gen 2.5 Heater Core Replacement - Tips, threads, pictures, etc

The FSM has the complete procedure. With any job that big I like to setup a few tables and as I take things apart, I set them on one end of the table and work to the other end. It’s a lot easier to put stuff back together when all your parts are laid out in the order you removed them.

rear window switches work, sometimes (not regulator issue)

Broken wire? Have you tried diagnosing this problem while having someone open and close the door at the same time?

Wet Carpet after driving through a puddle

I wasn’t thinking it was coming in from the top. Your sunroof has drain tubes that usually lead down to the wheel well area (my Montero doesn’t have a sunroof but my other cars do). If the tubes plug up the water will back up in them and if there are any connections along the way they can leak...

    Coolant Rust

At this point I’d be rigging up an external pump so you can flush that sucker all night long vs driving around or idling to get the job done. Pull the thermostat so you get full circulation.

What to check on a possible purchase of a Gen 2.5?

A good documented maintenance history is always a good sign.....the old test drive is the best eval beyond that imo. I always rock a good flashlight and I’m not afraid to crawl around under it a bit looking for anything odd. At the end of the day driving it is the best test.

Pulling the Engine - Torque Converter first, why?

Let us know when you find what was seized up. Love the instashade tent, it looks like it was hot. Remember when you put the motor back in, when you place the torque converter back on the trans, rotate it around until it slides “all the way” on. I put mine on, and it looked good, I thought it...

Pulling the Engine - Torque Converter first, why?

https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/2534166/Re:_Pull_Engine_Torque_Convert Good info there. A few quick Google searches has me leaning towards likely trans damage if you try to pull it with TC attached (front pump, seal and bushing would be damaged leading to a tranny...

Pulling the Engine - Torque Converter first, why?

Man you are in a bad situation.....I don’t remember how much extra space there was when I did my motor rebuild, but I feel like trying to get the motor out without unbolting the TC would be very difficult and risks damaging the input shaft to the transmission.....not sure. The TC slides onto the...

Why does my gen 3 feel like crap on highway?

“Alignment seems good” doesn’t cut it.....you need to have it checked out by a shop imo. A good shop will tell you if something needs to be replaced because they won’t be able to do a proper alignment otherwise. Best to have it done at a shop that does nothing but alignments, that way they...

    Brake Bleeding 101

I just wanted to double check myself here. If I’m working on just one brake and I disconnect the line to the caliper and the fluid leaks out to the point that the master cylinder reservoir is empty, I don’t need to re-bleed all 4 circuits do I? This happened recently and I only bled the one...

    Coolant Rust

Most important unanswered question: is the engine cooling properly? With all the chemicals you threw at it (and maybe the previous owners) you are bound to end up with some sediment. Is there a petcock you can open up to get a lower flush on the radiator?
