VHF/UHF Antennas - Front Bumper Mounts

Thanks Andrew, I went with a Genesis 3dB, 49 1/2", Base Load 5/8 wave antenna and a roof mag mount. I also picked up an external antenna to connect to my Uniden scanner out of curiosity to see if I get better reception.

VHF/UHF Antennas - Front Bumper Mounts

Mike, Thanks for the input. I hadn't considered the EMF radiation from the antenna. I think I found my set up: A NMO mag roof mount and a Genesis VHF Wideband Unity model antenna (132-174 MHz), 18 3/4", "End Fed 1/4 Wave" from Antenex. I just need to find out if I can add a spring to the...

VHF/UHF Antennas - Front Bumper Mounts

Thanks again. I'll need to check out the specs on that antenna to see if it Tx/Rx on 136-174 MHz.

VHF/UHF Antennas - Front Bumper Mounts

Does the location of the roof make a difference? For optimal performance, does the antenna have to be in the center of the roof or can it be mounted towards one of the sides, up front or back? Thanks.

VHF/UHF Antennas - Front Bumper Mounts

When not in use, my 4Runner is kept in our garage with my wife's car in the driveway. So I thought for convenience, I'd put the antenna with a NMO mount on the front bumper. When it can time to garage the truck, I could unscrew the antenna, screw on the NMO rain cap and drive into the garage...

VHF/UHF Antennas - Front Bumper Mounts

Have any of you guys mounted your antennas on your front bumper? I'm thinking of mounting my VHF antenna on my TJM bumper with a clamp-on TJM Aerial Bracket and a NMO mount. I'm trying to find anyone that has done something similar or uses some sort of a front bumper mount. Thanks.

Survival Sack: When things go bad...

The rescued family that survived for 17 days in their RV, are missing again . . . this time fugitives with warrants issued for the couple's arrest. CNN reports, "Eleven months ago, they'd been caught with a small amount of methamphetamine and a shotgun, deputies said, but they agreed to...

Survival Sack: When things go bad...

This is an interesting and fun topic to discuss. I'm a self-admitted "gadget guru" and I'm always curious about the other neat things folks have discovered. Survival packs are going to vary from person-to-person as well as location, weather conditions, expected length of use, and etc. I keep...

Mounting options for an Icon Radio??

I just received my Icon V8000 and I took it out to my 4Runner to see where it could be mounted. There aren't many available spots to mount the V8000. I'm open to all viable mounting locations. Is mounting the ham radio on top of my dash a possible spot? My only concern is that the rear of...

    Portable Fridges - Power Source?

Thanks for all the suggestions, these are all very helpful. Scott, Is there any hardware installed between the solar panels and your battery to aid in recharging or trickle-charging it? That might be a nice option since I don't think I'm going to install a dual battery system up front. I...

    Portable Fridges - Power Source?

There has been plenty of helpful discussion lately regarding different portable fridges. However, as far as I can tell, not much discussion on how to supply power to the fridges. With warmer weather quickly approaching, my SAR team will be spending weekends in the Shenandoah National Park...

    05-06 Diff Breather Extension Mod

I may be wrong, but I think your front diff breather is already extended by the factory up into the engine bay like my 4Runner. I did have to extend my rear breather.

HiLift Jack on an ARB Front Bumper

I did something similar with my TJM bumper using roll bar brackets and 1/2" bolts welded to the brackets: I've had my 48 inch Hi Lift mounted on my bumper for about 5,000 miles with no rattling. The roll bar brackets are quite stout and with two 1/2" bolts, I don't think the Hi Lift is going...
