Alternative tow points for stock rear bumper

What year 4Runner do you have? You can probably do one of three things, I did option number two: Option One: Install a pair of aftermarket tow hooks and bolt them to the rear frame. Option Two: Install a pair of Toyota OEM tow loops (I've forgotten the correct name for these) and bolt them...

Recommendation for 2M mobile radio and antennas

2 way (transmit & receive). I inquired with a local ham radio shop near me and they said they couldn't modify radios. They directed me to www.mods.dk for help.

    Kitchen Configurations:

We were conducting a winter survival training in the mountains with an overnight emergency bivy (sans tents) in 20 deg temps. It was great to put out my Jetboil and cook up some food and hot Mocca for my teammates.

    Sleeping Bags

In addition to your sleeping bag considerations, look into getting a good thermal barrier (sleeping pad) to sleep on as well. The Therm-A-Rest are fairly indestructable, unless your dog chews on it: http://www.rei.com/category/4500448.htm?vcat=REI_SSHP_CAMPING_TOC Another trick, find some...

    Sleeping Bags

This past weekend my SAR team conducted a winter survival field exercise which included an overnight bivy outside without tents. I was the FTL and my evaluator eventually became "hypothermic." Base informed us that there weren't any teams available to assist and to prepare an emergency bivy on...

    Sleeping Bags

What type of environment will you be camping in and how cold do you expect the weather to be? I have both a synthetic Kelty sleeping bag and a Marmot down bag. Both have their pros and cons. I always pack one in my SAR pack when on sims, missions or field exercises. Also will you be...

Routing wires for shell-top lights, antennae

I have 4 Hella 550s facing forward and 2 550s facing rearward. Ran the wires along the roof rack to meet above the driver's side rear passenger door. The wires were then snaked behind the rubber window gasket and followed it forward then down the pillar (still behind the rubber weather gasket)...

    Auxiliary lights

Yea, I hear you. I don't like blinding the guys up front. When I'm not up front at night, I'll only illuminate my outboard fogs and not the center driving lights. The fogs are angled away from the center so that they cast their light mostly to the sides. Helps alot on turns and switchbacks.

    Auxiliary lights

I'm happy with my auxillary lighting, a combination of Hella 550s and Piaa 520s. On the roof rack: 4 Hella 550s facing forward, 2 driving lights in the center with 2 fogs on either side. I also have a pair of 550 fogs on the rack facing the rear. On my TJM bumper: 2 Piaa 520 fogs. With...

Questions re power draw from aux lights

The relays are the stock Hella relays with inline fuses. As for the wiring the shop that installed my lights didn't use the stock wires provided in the Hella light boxes. Instead, they used their own wiring for my lights. I don't doubt they used any substandard wires. They are a reputable...

Questions re power draw from aux lights

I have noticed that when I turn on my 4 Hella 550 lights (55w each), my headlights dim. Turn up the stereo and they will dim a bit more. Can I solve this dimming issue with replacing my stock battery (5+ yrs old) with a better battery, such as an Optima Blue Top and/or should I look at also...

    Too many accessories....

$1.00, nice find. I think Walmart still carries them in the auto department. I remember seeing a 3 power outlet "box" that get wired to an aux. fuse box on the Web somewhere. I can't find the link, I'll post it if I find it.
