RAM 1500 with the 8 speed tranny?

Awesome feedback! I'm really glad that FCA was the first to bring a 1/2 ton diesel to the market, as it seems that decision has motivated other OEM's to follow suit. I really hope FCA continues to improve upon the 3.0l ecodiesel; even if it has had some problems, it's a promising design that...

Why I'll never buy another Chevy!

Let's be honest here: the OP started the thread expressing some very strong opinions about a particular brand, which is totally acceptable. Some people disagreed with the OP's assessment, which is also acceptable. The thread started to go downhill when it turned into brand-bashing and...

And of course it wouldn't be a GM thread without @Buliwyf showing up and lecturing everyone on why Ford rules...

RAM 1500 with the 8 speed tranny?

FCA's ecodiesel doesn't have the greatest of reputations, but there are a few on here who drive them (hopefully they can chime in with their experience). Ford's 3.0l v6 powerstroke just came out, and GM's inline 6 diesel has yet to be released, so there isn't any reliability data on those...

Why I'll never buy another Chevy!

Agree with most of this. GM has made significant contributions to the offroad segment as of late. That doesn't mean the brand, or the underlying vehicles, are perfect. I like Toyota's, but the TRD stamp is more about image than it is about outright performance; the underlying Toyota platforms...

Why I'll never buy another Chevy!

You can find brand new diesel ZR2's going for $39k on auto-trader, gasoline ZR2's are a bit cheaper. That's right in line with the pricing for the TRD Tacoma. You can't go off MSRP on the OEM website, you have to go off what the market is dictating. Edit: And considering what you actually...

Why I'll never buy another Chevy!

I'd say GM has given us quite a bit in recent years. Right now, they're the only North American OEM to offer a midsized pickup, with front and rear lockers and a diesel engine. They're literally giving us the 'Hilux' type pickup that us Overlanding snobs have been seeking for 20 years now. GM...

Is it possible to calculate payload?

More weight in the pickup bed means more work for the engine to do. I've no idea what the exact limits of the 5.7l Hemi are, but I'm not at all surprised to see that the 6.4l has a higher payload rating by comparison. A lot of people report that the 5.7l is barely adequate for the 2500/3500...

Is it possible to calculate payload?

I think the de-rate for the 5.7l has more to do with what the engine itself is capable of (towing and payload) and less to do what the underlying chassis can safely handle. That's a different topic all together, though arguably those engine considerations do factor into the payload and towing...

    Ranger Raptor testing in Flagstaff

You can still build and buy 1 ton's for $50k, sometimes less. Those $93k 1 ton's aren't actually worth $93k IMO; they're basically $50k trucks with $43k worth of features added. The poor SOB who buys that truck is going see a lot value lost during the first few years of ownership.

    Why so few GM Builds?

It won't do that last 10% very well though and, to some, that last 10% matters. Still a decent vehicle, but it has inherent compromises. Agree with all of this. My post was not claiming that highly modified fullsized trucks are the only worthy expedition vehicles. Rather I was disputing the...

    Why so few GM Builds?

Literally none of that stuff is needed to make a 3/4 ton truck expo ready. If you want an Expo-ready Ram, the Power Wagon has basically everything ready to go off the dealership floor. It's arguably the most expo-ready truck out of all 3 options. If you want an expo-ready GM, adding some...

    Why so few GM Builds?

Most of that applies to the other 3/4 tons on the market. GM's trucks have an IFS, and most of the known issues have been sorted out at this point and there are OEM and aftermarket locker options. Ram's have very nearly the same sort of suspension as the Ford's (radius arm solid axle in the...

    Why so few GM Builds?

This is true. I'm glad someone pointed that out. Nothing against Toyota's (i own one), but the domestic trucks (including GM) literally get driven into the ground and abused for years and years. The interior on some of them may not hold up so well, but most of those trucks will drive with...

    2019 Ford Ranger Payload?

I don't think most F-150 owners are getting anywhere close to 21 mpg overall with that 5.0l v8. If the Ranger with the ecoboost can get anything close to 21-22mpg in combined driving, I think that will be a good step forward within the gasoline midsized truck segment. I have high hopes for...

    2019 Ford Ranger Payload?

I'm pretty sure that 1800lb figure is the max, meaning for 2wd, single/extended cab, limited options. A crew cab, 4wd truck with moderate options will likely be closer to 1600-1500lb's based on another article I saw, but I guess we'll know for sure shortly.

    Ranger Raptor testing in Flagstaff

I think that 1,860lb payload will be with a stripped down, single cab or extended cab, 2wd. Still nothing to sneeze at, but the 4wd 4-doors will likely have lower payloads, at least according to the articles I've seen so far.

    Ranger Raptor testing in Flagstaff

I'm really glad to see that Ford didn't skimp out on the payload and towing. According to the specs (still unofficial), 4x4 models should have something in the ballpark of 1.5k-1.6k lbs of payload for the 4x4, which is very good for the midsized class of trucks. About 7.5k lbs of towing...

    Extreme hunting

    1) Your hypocrisy stems from the fact that you criticize polar bear hunters for being "pansy's" because you allege that their technological advantage makes the hunt far too "easy," but on the flip side you have no qualms about shooting a bunch of tame deer on an island....that is arguably a far...

    Is the Tacoma enough truck?

Noted, but I also think its worth pointing out that those mpg readout's are instantaneous estimates. They'll fluctuate as you accelerate/decelerate, go up grades, slow down, ect. The real measure to look for is the combined mpg (hand calculation) with all those emissions in place, and compare...
