5-wides are pretty common for tear drops that you sleep in as compared to adventure/expedition/off-road/...? trailers that you sleep on, or beside I guess. I have both and use them differently. I wouldn't take my tear drop to some places where I'm happy going with my off-road trailer.

@Eric_ - I sold my TJ a few months ago. It was a year round daily driver for 9 yrs. and saw a lot of miles. I bought it when I retired and I'm not exactly young. I've had an LJ for almost as long and will be keeping it for the same kind of use, plus it's one of my tow vehicles (small...
@MOAK - I've had no issues with my 5-wide and external wheels/fenders. It's a bit wider than my Jeeps but isn't a problem. I actually modified it to use Jeep wheels and 10" wide fenders after this pic was taken.
Good advice above. As for the box size of your adventure style trailer, I just finished one and camped with it for the first time 2 weekends ago. It towed great frontwards and backwards ... and no roll overs! (y) It's 4'x6' and it will be for solo camping. Everyone is different and if a...
I stumbled across this old thread while searching for something and am just resurrecting it because I have the same tent. I swapped a friend for some camping equipment and got this in exchange. I've only used it once and it was in terrible weather. It was great! It has a rain fly and a...
A slightly damaged Westphalia top came up on Kijiji last Fall for a good price and having seen your build thread a while back ... I WAS TEMPTED! My XJ is a 2 dr. and, while not the best configuration for overlanding, I'm adapting. A modification like yours would be a nice addition. It's a...
I've owned a lot of VWs over the years but none of the road worthy versions were particularly interesting. They were all fun and apart from day to day use I did a fair bit of camping with them. During the 70s I built and raced VW based cars in the Canadian Off Road Racing Association...
I was well into an off road trailer build for my own use and came to a sudden STOP when my wife decided she wanted to go camping with me. It totally caught me off guard as she had been an anti-camper up to that point. That trailer wasn't going to cut it for her so I put the build on hold and...
Thanks. Looks good. I designed mine for basically the same things - kayaks, boxes, an awning, etc. I built a similar one for my Jeep XJ and can can carry the same things on which ever vehicle I'm using.
Nice shot. (y)
Do you have one of the rest of your roof rack? I'm in the middle of building one for my LJ and the front looks a bit like yours. Just curious to see what you have. I'm also in the middle of painting it. Coincidentally grey like yours!
Today was new tire day for my '89 XJ. That's always a good day but even better today as I also put a set of original era Turbine wheels on it. They were in rough shape and I had wheel restoration shop take care of the work.
I love the Gladiators but the Comanches are great too. Compared...
That's a great platform to build on. There's so much you can do with it. I have 2 RENIX era Jeeps (1987 to 1990) and although some people shy away from them I love them! Have fun with it! (y)
We're fortunate in Southern Ontario in that we get far less fog and when it happens it's mostly late at night or early in the morning. Early morning daytime fog burns off pretty quickly. I can't say that the fog lights on any of my Jeeps have ever helped more than adjusting my driving ... slow...
I agree. I've just added a set of spot lights to my LJ. The driver's side is aimed straight down the right lane and the passenger's side to the right side ditch. I haven't wired them up yet but they will have independent switches, one for each light and separate from the headlight/fog light...
I think that generally speaking it would be considered to be "too bright". Some jurisdictions have a limit of 4 lights being on at once. The headlights would be 2 and one of either high beams or the fog lights would be the other 2.
