Look into self inflating mattresses. There are several different brands, but the 3"-4" thick ones work best. They come single wide with velcro tabs to connect 2 together if needed. The house brands at Cabelas, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, run about 70.00 each, but are well worth it. I use the 3"...

To me, it mainly depends on if you go it alone or travel in a group. In a group, usually a strap is all you need. If you travel alone, a winch may be a better option, at least you can self recover if you need to. I had a winch on my TJ since I mostly travel off road solo, never had to use it...

Actually it sounds like an interesting Idea, may have to look at it, as you said when the weather warms. Would be much less cumbersom than the 5 gallon hanging bags also.

Didn't make it out to the lava flow, didn't have a map. But there sure are lots of roads to explore.
