I had a 2v 5.4 never had a problem. Don't quote me, I believe the 01' 5.4 3v was introduced little more power etc. I wouldn't be concerned. You're looking at buying a 20 yo vehicle and it WILL be a project, but, you can make it as good as you can afford.

Pretty typical, the manufacturer mpg guestimate sounds good till you put a little weight behind it and make it work.

Ended up remodeling a 3 place motorcycle trailer, worked out well for carrying "more stuff" and I don't have to lift it 8 feet or mess with a ladder.

Thank you all for your input/replies , I will look into Thule/Yakima cross bars and proceed from there. From your replies it's evident my manual lift system should not be taxed, however, if I need to lift with the kayak I will get assistance . The last thing I want to do is break the lift...

It would be rare that I would lift with kayak on the roof. What I am most concerned about is the roof itself, I've searched Yakima and Thule cross bars for mounting brackets that mount at the outer edge or on the vertical side of the roof for more solid mounting , the roof area for mounting...
