Reducing the bulk - weekend camping

On lighter trips we can get two bags, two pads, one tent, inflatable pillows, and a few basic accessories like headlamps, small stove, etc, in a 70-liter North Face duffel bag. Pretty easy. In fact, we spent two weeks with a similar set up in Iceland with that kit, plus a small cooler and a...

    Question for Christophe re: Lauf

After a very lengthy testing period, lots of deliberating with myself as to how I really feel about it, and dragging my feet to get it all written down..... Here it is. http://expeditionportal.com/long-term-wrap-up-salsa-beargrease-with-lauf-carbonara-fork/ My impression of the Lauf Carbonara...

    kayak vs. canoe

We manage a canoe way better than a tandem kayak. We did a 100 mile open water sea kayak trip in a tandem in Alaska. Sucked big time.

    kayak vs. canoe

For starters, only white water and sea kayakers actually "roll" their boats and that is a very advanced skill and can only be achieved with specific types of kayaks. Anyway... Tandem kayaks require far more synergy with the other paddler than a canoe. With tandem kayaks, there's a definite...

    El Mariachi Bikepacking Setup 1.0

I might also suggest using Pronghorn straps on that seat bag to keep it from wagging, which it will certainly do with that p-cord. I LOVE pronghorn straps from Giant Loop. https://www.giantloopmoto.com/product/pronghorn-straps/ I keep an extra on hand. They're like reusable duct tape. A...

    El Mariachi Bikepacking Setup 1.0

Yup. That's the one. It's not going to be terribly warm, but the new insulated version is only a few bucks more. I'm not wild about the baffle design, but for the money, you really can't beat it considering it's 25-40% cheaper than most pads.

    El Mariachi Bikepacking Setup 1.0

Very cool. Man, that bar weight looks tough. I'd rather load up my back than suffer the bar weight. For a great pad option - Klymit Stratos, I think it's called. $65. Amazing value. Small as a can of beer.

    Mulit fuel stove -Which type?

I spent over a year testing 30 stoves for Overland Journal. Still gives my nightmares. LOL. I would suggest either the MSR XGK or Primus Omni Fuel. Both are pretty amazing, but burning anything other than white gas will be a complete hassle and require lots of maintenance.

Why don't i see any Thule or Yakima boxes on Overland rigs?

Answer: A 90 pound black lab. LOL Honestly, the way we travel, we often spend a few days camping, then a night in a hotel, and then repeat. We keep our camping gear, much of it bulky but very lightweight, in the box. People don't often break into cargo boxes. They don't know if they go to the...

    Yakima SkyRise RTT

Most RTTs fit on nearly all small SUVs and crossovers in a standard garage. Mine does with no problem. The reality is, every year tens of thousands of small wagons and crossovers are fitted with Yakima or Thule cargo boxes, so Yakima saw that as an easy buy-in for the potential RTT user. I...

FS: Rocky Road Outfitters Super Sliders Jeep Patriot - make offer

Don't need them. They only add weight to a vehicle that already doesn't benefit from added weight, particularly given I don't actually need them.

    Adventure Travel Boot Redux

My favorite boot ever is unfortunately the most hideous thing ever. La Sportiva Trango Cube. So light. So comfy. Next in line are Salewa Alp Flow Mids. http://expeditionportal.com/trail-tested-salewa-alp-flow-mid-gtx/ The Scarpas can be very easily resoled. Everyone I've known to use those...

FS: Rocky Road Outfitters Super Sliders Jeep Patriot - make offer

I have a set of RRO super sliders I would like to sell, as I just do not use them as intended. New they are $320 with about $75 for shipping. I'd like someone to pick them up locally in Prescott and I'd take any fair offer as I'd rather they not lurk around my house any longer than needed...

    Adventure Travel Boot Redux

Hahaha. I'm the opposite. I "overland" to get to the start of my hike, bike, ski, backpack, climb.... I enjoy the journey to that point in the vehicle, but if that's all I did I would go nuts. As much as I love wheels, all wheels, I've had a great year on foot. Trekked to Everest base camp...

    Adventure Travel Boot Redux

Every now and then I admit a get a bit bored with all the typical products the overland audience is told they should like. The reality is, the overland demographic is more and more intermixed with enthusiasts from other segments. As such, we're seeing a greater, and much welcomed, bit of...

The ExPo Mountain Bike Photo Thread

Those Yakotas were nice riding bikes. One of the best riding bikes I've ever owned was a 2001 Specialized S-Works E5-Columbus road bike in Aqua e Sapone team colors. Welded by Gary Yakota. Loved that bike. Wish I had kept it. Mario Cipolini colors (zebra).

Why don't i see any Thule or Yakima boxes on Overland rigs?

Not sure if the newer boxes are just more well made, but after driving thousands of miles of backroads with my boxes, I haven't had a single failure. I do think what you put in it, and how you do it, makes a huge difference in the longevity of your box.

Why don't i see any Thule or Yakima boxes on Overland rigs?

I'm a little hyper sensitive to this topic as I've used cargo boxes for 20 years. They just make so much sense. I get so annoyed by all the pushback by most overlanders. However, I do understand that they do look better on some vehicles more than others. A Skybox on a Defender 110 would look a...

The Mountain Bike Invasion of Wilderness Areas

I've said that for years and been open about challenging one of the more vocal and well known leaders of the OHV community, much to the dismay of this community. I don't challenge his mission, just his methods. He has fostered a very us versus them, all or nothing, we're right and you're wrong...
