GMT800 Suburban Towing issues: Gearing or power?

Even sourcing used gears, and skipping the bearings, it's hard to get down that low. I charge $400 labor just for Super Duty brakes. If he can do a Super Duty for $50/hr, I expect biz to pick up for him. That's one heck of a good resource.

GMT800 Suburban Towing issues: Gearing or power?

I'm looking at $1000 for 4.88's and parts, $650 Yukon locker, and at least $1000 in labor. Almost $3000 for 4.88's and a front locker. I suppose you could knock $500 off of that if we reuse bearings and such. The truck is brand new after all. If he does Jeeps for $880, give him a good...

GMT800 Suburban Towing issues: Gearing or power?

I read it, just ignored it. That's FREE. What's the catch? Does he have acreage? Because if he can swap gears for anywhere near that consistently, half of this forum will be camping out in his yard.

GMT800 Suburban Towing issues: Gearing or power?

Rpm is harmless, I'd worry more about hard shifts. Let the engine sing, and manually downshift it early. Don't wait for Gm's miserable cruise control to do it for you. That engine isn't even remotely close to being able to hit ''high rpm's'', so don't worry about it. First gear sounds...

    Strapping down a kayak to a roof-rack

I use the larger Harbor Fruaght ratchet straps. They're as wide as a seatbelt. The skinny 1" versions are absolute garbage. I use foam padding that'll squish enough to take slack out of the lines, without the strap crushing the kayaks.

    Thoughts/Input on GM engines appreciated

I can go along with the 6.0, and 8.1, but I never liked any of my GM transmissions. Mostly the way they were programmed to shift. And the trans cooler lines failed often.

How long do kids like camping?

All their lives. But if they show interest, keep them engaged. My father, and grandfather never let me take part in camping enough. Leveling the trailer, building the fire, etc. etc. Always something lame and heavy like fill the fra$%ing 5 gallon water jug, that I could barely carry...

Ski Bum Truck V2.0, F450 Rough Road RV

Ah, aluminum outers, steel inners. I hate that. I'd grab two more wheels off ebay and run traction tires all the way around. Easy rotations then.

    Why use a RTT?

Don't forget khaki pants with zip off legs. ....oh, and a snorkel that's three times taller than the level of any river the truck could actually cross.

    Why use a RTT?

Sadly, parking anywhere without pavement is ''expo'' now. Or between any two points of such.

Not sure where to post this...SO! buying a new truck. Thoughts?

I hope you don't talk to people like that in person. Especially in the back country. We bury folks that talk like that, around here.

    Why use a RTT?

Be careful with the longer ones. For example the 245 has similar layout and beds. Albeit, crammed into a tighter space. If you end up on the east coast, 25' boxes are max for me.

    Why use a RTT?

Check out the Camplite TT's. 4000# with a slide. We bivvy sac in Fl in the winter. Never close tent windows on the east coast. Use your bag instead.
