Garmin Tread Overland Edition - any users yet?

I often end up in an area for several days where there is absolutely no cell service so I just turn off my cell phone so its not using up battery constantly searching for service. When I do that, the Tread throws up constant reminders that it is disconnected from the phone. Have you figured...

    campsite pics..lets see um

That's true not just for tent camping and in all terrain, not just forest. I live in the desert and the silliest thing I see is people setting up camp in a dry wash because it is free of brush and fairly level. It can also become a river from rain falling many miles away. And if I'm camped...

    Starlink or Garmin in reach

My experience has been that if you are down in a canyon or otherwise surrounded by tall mountains (that don't have repeaters on them) it really doesn't matter how much power your radio puts out or how good the antenna is, you're not going to get a signal out.

    Starlink or Garmin in reach

You must travel in the parts of the country that have a lot of repeaters. Out here in northern Nevada/southeast Oregon/southwest Idaho GMRS or HAM radios are good only for short-range car-to-car communications. I belong to a Sheriff's Search and Rescue group and our vehicles are equipped...

Sneak Peek….Dodge Mid Sized Pickup Design Leaked!

Looks like just another car that's missing the trunk lid to me. Lots of them around these days from various manufacturers.

Is Your GM Truck or SUV “Spying” On You?

I have a fairly new Toyota 4Runner and it has its own version of GM's OnStar. It is constantly transmitting data to Toyota about the vehicle and how it is being used. On the 4Runner forums there are several discussions on how to stop this, as it seems the data transfer system is tied in with...

Is GM not the best platform for a overland build?

Mostly because of the way GM trucks are designed. I haven't looked at new GM trucks in a few years (both GM dealers in the nearest towns have shut down) but pre 2020 not only not only did stock GM 2500 and 3500 trucks not have anywhere near the ground clearance under the middle of the truck...

    Ramcharger specs are out

So with a couple people and camping gear, easily over 8,000 lb....better keep it on firm ground.

    Ramcharger specs are out

We all know that weight is a major consideration for any vehicle used off pavement. I've yet to find a definitive figure for how much this new Ramcharger actually weighs.

News Flash! Americans don't want expensive and unreliable cars😳

They definitely need to step up their game as far as reliability. I've been a Jeep owner for many years - but my current one is a 2006. A couple years ago I was considering buying a new one - more comfortable, more roomy than my TJ, and they featured that 8 speed automatic which is a wonderful...

    2024 F150

Bought mine over 8 years ago. Don't remember exactly what they cost but they were expensive back then and I'm sure they are much more expensive now. Mine are the 1/4" thick aluminum ones also. Installation was easy - they bolt to existing holes in the frame. One caveat...to reach the oil...

New Garmin inReach - inReach Messenger Plus

My InReach subscription costs me $12 a month, so $144 a year. That's just about a tank of gas for my truck. Small price to pay to have communications while in the back country. But then I'm in the back country and out of cell phone range just about every week. If you think the InReach...

    2024 F150

I hear you about the electronic nannies. I was not ready to buy a new pickup in 2016 but I read that Ford was going to put the automatic start-stop technology and the new 10 speed automatic in the 2017 models so I bought early to not have to put up with start-stop and be a beta tester for the...

    2024 F150

Only if you are in to the turbos all the time. Otherwise, its a gas sipper. Been driving my 2016 F150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost, 3.55 gears, for almost 9 years now; my overall fuel mileage since new is 20 mpg and that includes a lot of towing miles which halves the non-towing fuel mileage. And...

Thoughts on overall height of your set up. How tall is too tall for the backcountry?

That will depend on how much flex is in your truck's frame. I had to make a platform for my camper to raise it ~3" above the cab of my Dodge. Otherwise, when I got it in a good twist (to where one front tire and one rear tire just about come off the ground), the cab and the camper would make...
