The drums, backing plates and hardware drop 80-100 pounds but the axle is still heavy. I have an 8 on 6.5 matching pattern on my truck
so I never changed the axle. If I had another tow vehicle I would go with a new lighter axle.
I took every unneeded piece off but still am about 900 empty...
Great trailers. Put on a diet and they can get close to 1000 pounds.
I use mine for everything. Pulls great and is tough.
I do wish I would have kept my parking brakes though.

The spring perches are needed to center the axle on the spring center pin.
There are kits that have bolts and stops that mount flush to the original spring pads.
Find a trade school, weld shop or neighbor that has a welder and do it right.
I like the look of the flare less trailers. nothing to snag.
As others said they were cobbled together with what was available.
Table wise I mounted two 1 1/4" hitch receivers under the tub and it makes a great insert for a table.

I did mot change my 8 bolt axle because it matched the lug pattern of my 2500HD I did remove the non working brake system for weight savings.
Patrick did change his axle to a six lug toyota to match his tow rig.
FandL changed his axle out to a dexter and has spacers to match his jeep.
