Sleeping Bag Alternative for Long-term International Trip

If you prefer not-bag, then by all means plan for sheets and a warm blanket or two. The duvet is a good thought as that'd be easier to launder too. Or go wool blanket and just plan to whack it with a beater every so often! :D

Sleeping Bag Alternative for Long-term International Trip

I think you're on the right track, thinking in terms of being able to easily wash things, especially the stuff that will be right up to your skin. Any sort of down - be it your existing comforter or a new fancy thing, should compact enough to be readily stored during the "off" seasons...

Urgent help needed. 2013 GMC 2500HD, broken down in Brazil

The ECM Relay and power codes make me think that's your main issue. The ECM drives the spark and if there's an issue w/ voltage or current supply, it's a likely failure point. One thing to check is that GM often used the same size relays in multiple positions - if your friend does not have...

anyone have ram mounts? Mine won't tighten...

The mechanism is fairly straightforward - the ball goes into the socket and the socket gets tighter when screwed down. Is there a chance the ball is not the correct size? https://www.rammount.com/support/glossary Not only are RAM mount components sized for a particular ball diameter, the...

Skills to build my own expedition vehicle??

Most important (maybe even the only important) skill is the ability to move forward with a small amount of uncertainty and learn as you go. Trying to get all the skills you need *before* you start means that you will probably never really start. My rig is probably about as self-built as one...

    Pleasure Way Traverse Build, Poppy

How was the Raptorliner job on the roof? The pop-top on my GTRV is 25 years old and is due to for some sort of care, and I've been thinking raptor as well.

Using 'shipping wheels' to fit van into container instead of RORO

From what I've seen of the folks that use them: The weight isn't much of a concern, because they do NOT carry them full time. They're used for the shipping evolution, then generally stored or shipped overland separately to someplace near the final-destination so that they can be re-used for...

Safety Recall: Sea-to-Summit Alpha and Sigma Pots

Hey all, I got an email about this last night and I thought I'd share it here, in case other Expo folks also own these pots but aren't getting notified. Sea to Summit has announced a voluntary recall on some versions of the latching mechanism on their Alpha and Sigma pot sets...

Using 'shipping wheels' to fit van into container instead of RORO

Agreed. It's also important to remember one generally doesn't roll out from the shipping container and directly into the Kalahari. Stuff like roof racks and roof-mount solar panels could be removed/replaced for the duration of the shipping evolution. Four bolts moves my roof basket inside the...

    Truck Bed Camper vs Van/Motorhome

The first and most obvious thing is the size of the box. You aren't going to find a steel-construction vehicle (Van) the size of the big fuso trucks. The second thing is the flex you've observed. Your choices are that the box can move around on the frame, or the box itself would need to flex...

    Battery Isolator Location?

Knowing the actual gauge of the cable will help you decide, but if it's really only a little bigger than 10-gauge, maybe better to use that as a signal wire or for running power to a single accessory. Blue Sea can help you calculate the needed gauge: http://circuitwizard.bluesea.com/ The...

How noisy are aluminum storage cases?

2mm EVA craft foam is also a solid choice, it's what I use for making my own "TrekPak" style dividers, etc. It's available in 36" x 60" rolls which is a useful size for a lot of projects.

How noisy are aluminum storage cases?

I'm currently using the Sterilite "15 gallon snap-lid" totes, #1464. They're not overland-sexy, but they're inexpensive and one weighs about 4.8lbs, versus 11+ lbs for a similarly-sized Zarges case. (Or a whopping 26lbs for the empty MilSurp Medical chest I used to use!!!!) As I noted above...

How noisy are aluminum storage cases?

Yes, they're generally raw aluminum so the "black dust", or at least a light oxide film, has been reported. When I was using aluminum cases, they were MilSurp Medical chests, so they had the NATO OD green paint both outside and inside - no issues with dust in this case. Aluminum is tricky to...

How noisy are aluminum storage cases?

They only make noise if something rubs/strikes them. The more full they are, the duller the "thunk". If you have a seatbelt buckle bouncing off an empty Zarges case, you'll go insane after 40 miles. If you have a full case strapped down and nothing touching it intermittently, I doubt you'll...

Lag bolt length for tent stakes

Home Depot - https://www.homedepot.com/p/10-in-Plastic-Stake-4150/202087431 These are usually stocked in/near the building supplies section (lumber, fencing, etc.), but the HD website will usually tell you aisle/bay number for your local store. I think mine are 8", not sure if HD still sells...

    Looking for non staining lube

I'm still confused. I use this same kind of mounting rail in my van, 100% unlubricated. You bring the table to the wall at about a 30° angle and drop the hook on the top of the table's rail over the round part of the wall's rail. Tilt the table down to level, and deploy the leg or whatever...

4WD Ford Pleasureway Camper Van - $42,500 (SoCal)

I went and looked at this van when I first saw it listed. Pleasure Way Traverses are on my list of vans to keep an eye on, since they're very much like my GTRV Astro, but a bit bigger. The Good: These vans have the amenities and living space of a VW Westy - sink, stove, fridge, heater, etc...

    Looking for non staining lube

Lubes aside - WHY DO YOU NEED TO LUBRICATE THAT BRACKET? That style of table support is meant to be removed by tilting the table up, and lifting. It is not normally a sliding mechanism - at least not beyond moving the table a few inches to better accommodate beer bellies.

Ford F-250 4x4 Utility Bed. Great for Truck Camper!

It's a cool truck, but you'd have a hell of a time getting a truck camper into that bed. The sides are too tall and the "bed" is too narrow. Usually either the utility body or the camper need to be custom-tailored to make that combo work.
