    Post Pic's of your Jeep

I posted this elsewhere, but probably more appropriate here... Towed the vintage boat 180 miles to the coast this past weekend. This is one of the main duties the ZJ was bought to perform, and it handled it beautifully. This is also why the trail mods won't get too crazy on this vehicle.

What did you do to your Expo Jeep today?

Well, this weekend, not today, but I towed the vintage boat 180 miles each way for a weekend at the coast. Snoball did great but 9.75 mpg hurts my feelings. Eh, I guess there's more to life than gas mileage!

    Build & Trips on a '12 Trek Mamba 29er

It's hard to gauge difficulty when approaching something like that with no prior experience. Even for a trail rider with a lot of time in the saddle, multi day loaded slogs over mountains in warm weather is a completely different animal. Living in an area that doesn't have real mountains to...

    Post Pic's of your Jeep

I'm going to quote you too, just so you'll get alerted to the post. Great looking XJ! What front bumper are you running? I'm interested in using something like the round bar over the winch as part of a fab idea for my ZJ. The size and shape on that one look like they might be what I need.

    Wilco Hitchgate Solo Review

Do these have any sort of locking mechanism at the half or full swung-out locations? I like the look of them, and swing out bumpers for a ZJ are rare.

Any Big and Tall guys made mods to fit in an XJ for Overland?

OTOH, I'm not totally convinced that a Jeep COULDN'T catch fire from a water-filled heater either.... They're special that way.

Any Big and Tall guys made mods to fit in an XJ for Overland?

No help, but I bought a ZJ because the XJs were too small for me at 6'2" and 260lbs. Also too underpowered to pull my boat long distance. I avoided the WJ because I preferred the 318 to the 4.7. My ZJ is still pretty stock compared to most of the guys here, but it's comfortable on the road and...

Bumper mount spare and boat launching

The liftgate clears nicely, actually. I agree about backing a trailer using mirrors, and I can. I can back trailers into places that terrify most people. Hell I have to back it down a driveway around a blind corner through a gate and into a garage next to a nice Mustang any time I come home...

Bumper mount spare and boat launching

Hmm. Good point. The boat's light though - maybe 2k lbs with trailer, and I'd bet the tongue weight is under 150lbs because I can dead lift it. Still, something to think about.

    Navigation

I just use my phone, but I'm not riding real wilderness. Most of my friends who do real backcountry are using the models you mentioned. The eTrex is frequently available used on the various bikepacking forums and groups for small investment. There is a benefit to using hardware that is common in...

Bumper mount spare and boat launching

I'm considering at some point in the future (i.e. not soon) moving the spare from inside my ZJ to a bumper mount. One of the main duties for the truck, though, is towing and launching my vintage trihull boat. It seems like the standard rear swing out would be troublesome for boat launches. It...

    Post Pic's of your Jeep

played hooky last Friday and went rambling in the WMA near my house. Found a perfect camping spot, but unfortunately they don't allow dispersed camping. Of course, there was an obviously-used gravel fire ring .... I also found a road on the map that hadn't been maintained in a while. There...

Opinions on methods to carry 4 bikes on a 4Runner?

I'd split it up and put 2 bikes on the roof and 2 on the hitch. If you aren't lifted too much the roof is easy to deal with. I've got Yakima fork-trap trays on my Jeep and use them multiple times a week, even with heavier dual-sus trail bikes. The only downside is storing the loose front wheels...

    Favorite highway tire?

The looks I guess. If you are a looks over function person, that's the ticket. Personally, I ran Michelin LTX MS2s on a 2wd Explorer over every maintained secondary dirt/clay/gravel road imaginable and never got stuck or had a flat. Granted, there's no snow here though. They were awesome on...

    Build & Trips on a '12 Trek Mamba 29er

I pick up leaves here and there. It's buzzy but they usually fly out in short order with a few bumps. If not, just stop and pluck em out. Especially when riding loaded, speed and low ET aren't really the goal! DavidinDenver makes a good point about tire size varying too. You see the same thing...

    Build & Trips on a '12 Trek Mamba 29er

As a heavy rider I'm a fan of the biggest tires I can make work on a mountain bike. Bigger tires allow you to run lower pressures ata given load, thereby maximizing traction and comfort (especially on a hardtail.) My 920 came with 2.1s on if so I ran them as long as I could. A few of those...

    Favorite highway tire?

I'm running Cooper AT3s but haven't really had them on that long. So far I'm pretty impressed. I mostly run dirt roads and such, but they've done well on pavement, on the red clay roads when things were muddy, and on the woodland hill and dale I've crawled around on. They're C rated, so I don't...
