Our Full Time Off Grid Power System

Nice looking rig you have. And I would not be concerned at all with your parallel setup. As you stated those batteries have automatic equalization so moving the cable over will make no difference in the charging/load performance. If they were of a design without the BMS then you would want to...

    Polar Wire Products

I'm sure that wire is good but IMO, way overpriced for what you get. I'm a fan of the TEMCo wire. https://temcoindustrial.com It has comparable specs and less than half the price. Also TEMCo has been around twice as long as Polar Wire. I'm not meaning to be offensive. Just pointing out there...

Lithium is engine bay (heat blankets)

I honestly don't think heat is going to be an issue. I have been using the same lithium battery in my motorcycle for almost 9 years now with no ill effects. It has been ran in Lucerne, El Mirage, even Randsburg in well over 100 degree temps. It starts my bike every time.

Solar Wiring question - gauge and connector type?

Right on Rando, You are a pretty sharp dude. I'm all for learning another option for wire sizing and the advantage of using a PWM controller for your charging system. Interesting math showing that voltage drop is a concern when using MPPT technology. Math is not one of my strong suits!! LOL...

Lithium is engine bay (heat blankets)

A lot of it depends on how cold of temperatures and how long. Unless you have some kind of heating element, freezing temps are going to penetrate any kind of insulation you have in the engine bay.

Solar Wiring question - gauge and connector type?

That is very interesting and something I have not considered. It's easy to forget how many volts some of these solar panels pump out. Even with an MPPT charge controller a few volts drop would not be a big deal. As long as the wires can handle the amps then sizing down wires is very doable...

    Portable Power Pack

I hear you there!! Unfortunately it is an impossible task when you factor in the labor involved. Even slapping one together quickly, a one off would take a good part of a day. I'm excited to see the new Jackery 1500 that will be announced in less than a few weeks. And Jackery is also making a...

    Portable Power Pack

A solar generator is a completely different device than a UPS. The UPS runtime is measured in minutes so of course the batteries are easy to change. I too have seen inside a Jackery solar generator. It is no more difficult to access components than a home built unit. I can understand if it's...

    Portable Power Pack

Look no further than the Jackery solar generators!! Very easy to service with simple hand tools. All the components are replaceable. With over 500 full discharge to charge cycles and even after that having 80% of usable battery charge, it's going to last a long time before batteries will need...

Why 41ºF threshold for Victron Smart Battery Sense...

Yes, it is to prevent damage to lithium batteries. Victron is using the standard low temperature safe charge of 41 degrees for lithium. The charge controller does not know what brand of lithium you are using so its default is set to error on the side of caution. You can easily set your own...

Thoughts on this trailer power system.

And boy the price of lithium is through the roof for what you get.

Thoughts on this trailer power system.

A 1500 watt inverter is only good for less than 400 amps of stored power. The battery array he is choosing has just over half of that at 225 amp hour. Of course he won't use all of it. But the inverter is the perfect size for future upgrades to lithium or adding another lead acid battery. That...

Anyone has installed a Redarc Manager30? I have a couple questions...

Hi there Christian, That looks to be a very sweet setup you are going with!! As a disclaimer I do not have experience with the Redarc but for the length of run you are doing and to minimize voltage drop I would run #4 AWG for both input and output. The reason Redarc recommends the smaller wire...

Thoughts on this trailer power system.

The choices you have made for your trailer are good ones. They are well thought out and best bang for the buck. I would have no problem at all with GoPower products. The company has been around for 25 years. If you are living in Canada getting the lead acid over lithium will be a slight...

    Portable Power Pack

Would it be asking too much to please stay on topic? Those kind of comments do not belong anywhere on Expedition Portals platform and serves no purpose. So here is my Solar Generator setup: The beauty of it is versatility in a very small and lightweight package!! It can be used as a solar...

    Portable Power Pack

I have not experienced a deceptive solar generator vender. Jackery is local to me and very honest and forthcoming with their products. Bang for the buck they are hard to beat. DIY solar generators are just not my thing and not cost effective for my application. My dual battery setup with solar...

Properly Sized Circuit Breakers & Busbar

That's basically about it if the device is not self protected. Can't go wrong with sizing wire a little larger.

Properly Sized Circuit Breakers & Busbar

Right on!! looks good!! I don't see why that won't work. I'm assuming you are running a wire directly from battery to DCDC charger and using the circuit breaker as a switch for servicing components. The negative busbar is really the way to go when wiring up stuff. I makes connections much...

Properly Sized Circuit Breakers & Busbar

Please don't confuse the person who is trying to learn. Joking is fine but misrepresenting and trolling to get a reaction is not. That is just how Verksad rolls. Unfortunately it confuses someone who is trying to learn. Basically it's important to know that overcurrent protection, be it a...
