Was used to cross the Darien gap.
This guy started a build thread, maybe follow him?

Little bit more done tonight. Got the bumper tabs tacked on and made a new engagement handle for the winch. Still need to find a fairlead and add a little more support to the bumper mounting.
I also threw my rope back on the front for kicks. It used to be wrapped around the bumper but...
Here is where I am at as of last night.
The winch sits nicely in the frame. I'm thinking about adding one more support from the bumper to the winch baseplate in the center for a bit more support. I also want to add at least on point for a hook or shackle. I added some pieces to my original...
I'm actually sort of interested in these little guys. I currently daily drive a 2001 Cherokee that is slowly getting claimed by MN rust at 190 thousand miles. The big bonus of older jeeps is of course the 4.0 liter. Lots of torque for towing. Not the greatest mileage. The bummer about the...
I love love love mine! I've had a lot of fun touring the countryside with it. It is sort of a drag for long distance slab riding without a windshield. Performance wise I would like to save up and buy two new chains and gear sets. One lower set for trails and one higher set for trips. First just...
Here are a few shots of my current project. I'm mounting a Koenig electric model to the front of the jeep and changing the front bumper to match.
Been using a scissor jack to hold the winch up. The bottle jack kept losing pressure and dropping the pieces :Wow1:
Got the piece of steel at...
Ehhhhhhhh maybe? That is pretty wide, those rims are only about 4.5 or 5 inches wide. Might rub but there are steering stops. It could be hard to steer as well. Maybe mount a used one to check things out?
You are probably going to have to find something like 215/85r16s to fit those rims. You might be able to go tubeless, my rims weren't in that great of shape so I went with tubes.

This fall and winter I have been having problems keeping the engine temp up as well as running the heater. Of course you can put cardboard in front of the radiator but I found the heat would spike right up and then drop way off. And it would overheat when you left the engine idling. So I made...
I'm currently using 235/75r15 Cooper adventurers. No rubbing that I have noticed without any lift. You *Might* get 215/85r16 tires to fit with a little lift. If I was going to invest any money in a lift kit I would only go for an Old Man Emu setup. Very high quality in the long run and it won't...
I also added some peices for the mechanism that engages the winch drum.
This is what the fairlead looks like. My dad made it for me by using a hole saw to start the ends and then cutting in between. Thats why dads make the big bucks.
More details of how the engagement mechanism works...
Alright I'm back. The first project I'm going to highlight is the installation of a rear mounted PTO winch. I was inspired by this koenig crane setup. It is run from a Spicer PTO bolted to the back of the jeep transmission. This won't allow you to open the tailgate however. And I have a swing...
Well you certainly have some options. Building on what others have said...
If that jeep is indeed a '42 and in good original condition, you could repair it and and sell it for a much more common yet similar CJ2A or CJ3A. Or you could restore it and enjoy it for what it is. My opinion is that...
Metcalf has an extremely cool flattie. I have a CJ that is basically stock. There is not a whole bunch of space available for gear. I sort of think about it like going backpacking. Everything has to fit in one bag or it isn't coming along. Kind of fun that way actually. What questions do you...
Hello everyone!
I'm new to the forum here, and I thought I would throw my projects into the ring for all to see. My vehicle is a hodgepodge of late '40s and early '50s Willys jeeps with a few new parts thrown in. I hope to use this thread to feature some of my build projects in the future. I...
