I too have found that AWD is a bit better than 4WD in the snow... This experience comes from driving my 3rd gen 4runner with the multimode case and my 6 speed FJ cruiser which is AWD all the time with a locking center diff for 4wd

I did not build a bumper for the rear, I went expedition one. Quality is amazing, swing out carries rotopax cans and a highlift. Also, they factor in backup camera mounting. I highly recomend.

Why not use one of the many DC-DC chargers out there that are designed for this use (Redarc, ctek, etc). They have intelligent charging and are fully designed to do this.
