Drill a hole in the side using a strong mount like a Breedlove (Google them). Then wire antenna up. Fire stick it whip will do fine.

The car is the other half of the antenna. So the roof is ideal. As you are using the roof, it seems impractical.
Consider the engine hood. There are systems that attach there. Also on a bull bar if you have one.
As always see http://wwwk0bg.com for ideas and pictures.

Generally when I ran APRS I always had my status as QRV 144.39 PL100.0 so if someone saw my beacon close enough we'd make contact and then move elsewhere. Usually 446.025
Seems with the sticker folks could go the same. Put your fav overland ham, GMRS, cb frequency and mode (AM, SSB, FM)

Might consider not just the call sign but the frequency being monitored...i.e. 146.58 FM or something. Nice to say hi as you drive by. Just my 2 cents.
I am NOT affiliated with this company!!!
So I would pass this tidbit along to the other gadget geeks on here. I was gifted a really cool solar powered LED by Nokero http://nokero.com/ a couple years ago. We have used it as a flashlight and as a room light at home when power goes out. (It lights...
Larsen makes NMO antennas for 26/27 MHZ. The Larsen brand products are extremely sturdy and long lasting. Just do yourself a favor and drill a hole in the body. It makes a structural and RF difference you won't regret

What kind of rig? From personal experience Icom has no front end. Kenwood is best but not perfect. Yaesu is in the middle. This is based on living in the Northern VA area where you can walk on RF.
Check these out. http://www.parelectronics.com/amateur.php
I use these on my rigs (current Yaesu...
What pyrite said....it's a static discharge feature. So long as it's properly grounded and you are running legal power you are fine without it.

Well took the 18 mos old to a local state park last weekend. I decided since he was all about walking and playing outside we'd try and see how it went.
Attempt 1: after breakfast we jumped in the truck and headed over the mountain. I got 2/3 of the way there and looked back...little bugger was...
Going back to the glass mount concept there are a great many reasons to avoid that scenario altogether. Not the least of which is the amazing level of loss there is going through glass which is in any way tinted (as most vehicle glass is).
Don't forget, drilling holes is not so bad. That first...
Have you looked at pictures here http://k0bg.com? There may be hints in the text or in the voluminous install pics to help.

Coax length is not an issue mobile. Unless you are in a semi and have the rig in a cab and the antenna waaaaaaaaaay. Back on the trailer door, loss is not an issue.

One thing on dual vfo. You can have side A on your convoy and side B on a calling frequency, repeater, etc. To monitor.

The 7900 and 710 would be my preferences. My rationale is: not too much DStar in the back woods yet (880H). The 400dr is not one I am familiar with so can't comment.
If APRS is important that 710 rocks. If not the 7900 is better on cost (but the Kenwood I find more user friendly.) YMMV...
Another set of nets to monitor are on 40m between 7.225 and 7.270 LSB. Looking around there after say, 10am EST/EDT there are three daytime nets for mobiles. The ECARS net, the SouthCARS net, and the MidCARS net. Net controls are all over and, though scheduled, not always present. In the...
