Hope you don't mind me chiming in. I'm not associated with any rooftent manufacturers now.
My biggest concern eons ago when we were first bringing in the AutoHome tents was high speed stability and safety in an accidents. AutoHome had a trick way of mounting that worked with sport bars...
I've seen quite a few Maggiolinas modified with interior trap doors.
Probably the best and most useful was a UniMog where he wanted the space for his kids but wanted to keep an eye on them so the doors were even disabled. It did have a motor added to handle the lift (cost was not a big...
If you don't want to spend a fortune and need a narrow tent, what about going "old school" with an OverCamp? Here is my old tent from the stone ages.
AutoHome still make them. Mike was selling them for $1200 a couple years ago, but with the dollar so weak, figure on about $1500 or so landed...
Very cool, I saw a little Citroen 2cv panel van made up as a similar camper a couple years ago in Portland Oregon. It looked like a perfect little rig to go around the world with and the fellow selling it said it had. What I likes is the way the rear opened up, the fellow had made an awning...
Yeah, I see your point, your 4runner's raised bars starts at the "B" pillars, would be nice if they gave you another six inches up front.
What you need is an attachment for another bar up front. Turns out it isn't so bad. Here is how I would do it...
I agree with DWW that the little Italian espresso makers are a great for camping. My brother in law has a small one cup one that he takes everywhere in the back country.
One question, I would love to carry roasted beans and grind them. Does anyone know of a small hand operated coffee bean...
Corey,
I forgot, yes, you can the splice the fan into the same feed as the light, they use very little power. When I had my old Maggiolina, they came with a light that was more of a place holder, so we used to take it out and replace with a couple Hella halogen chart lights for reading and...
Corey,
Yes, that is the fan I used but I think the one Mike suggests may be better. I've broken a couple of the Hellas as the plastic is a little flimsy but the fan is really quiet and nice. Now I'm using a goofy Coleman fan that has floppy rubber blades in my Columbus. I works well...
Here are a couple sources for fabric to torture and the tools you may like
SailRite - http://www.sailrite.com/
Seattle Fabrics - http://seattlefabrics.com/
I agree with AeroNautiCal that GE's eVent fabric is brilliant. I've been using a drysuit made of it and am very impressed. For your applications where you need fabric for a single walled tent with a highly breathable membrane, I think it would be a good choice. Another advantage is that the...
Hot weather is really where a RTT excels, imagine camping on the ground, it never cools off. Up high at least the air can cool off. I used to have a Hella turbo fan wired in. They are excellent, it drew something like two tenths of an amp, so you could run it as long as you wanted.
You...
Hi Guys,
My advice is to use an expedition basket only if you need it. All the AutoHome tents are designed to mount on two aftermarket roof bars, and they mean it. You will see on occasion a three or four bar setup but that isn't for the tent, it's for the vehicle. The factory says that the...
Fabric is really a key component to a pop up or RTT. Really is a lot of differing approaches. I was involved in some of AutoHome designs and the engineering of the fabric was taken very seriously not only the fabric but the colors.
I would steer away from the fabrics used in car covers...
I agree with Mr. Moody
Both are great tents but I feel for our conditions here in North America, the hardshelled tents are better and cheaper in the long run. They are much more aerodynamic, that alone pays the added cost in something like 30,000 miles. You can keep the tent on full time...
I've seen a lot of Maggiolinas mounted on pickup truck beds. The concepts seem to be as varied as the uses. It sounds like you are looking at this so that it is easier to get in your garage.
Normally, you want to mount a RTT above and out of the way so that you have the bed clear for gear...
AutoHome's ACS mat has a really nice feel to it. My acid test was to put it in a marine environment on the wood bunks aboard my 65 year old wooden racing sailboat. The boat is always wet being in San Francisco and anything put on the bunks after a sail would just sit and mildew, it was bad...
Actually, AutoHome's OverLand and OverCamp do not require a fly, they are three season to four season right out of the box the fabric is really thick. They do have an interesting accessory, the "Winter hood" that fits over the tent and extends the range. I don't know about you but I find a...
The ladder on AutoHome's OverCamp does what you are talking about and may be a good guide. Because the tent is long and thin when closed, you can't really telescope it like you can with a more conventional folding rooftent. They welded two steel bushings or rings to the tent's subframe so that...
Air-Camping is still around
You have a vintage RTT. Only saw one Air-Camping tent in North America. They are part of AutoHome, expedition tents, their OverLand is similar but reengineered and cleaned up for everyone to use. They are still in business making expedition quality tents if you...
