Why does food only come in round cans?

Corned beef is another one that often comes in a rectangular can, though some brands (e.g. Ox and Palm) are in round. Canned fish (sardines, sauries, eel, etc) also come in custom shapes. Tetra Pak is a brand of cardboard and foil 'can' that is rectangular. Soy and rice milk often comes in...

Truck tent for compact trucks, $65 shipped...

I think one or two on EOC (Element forum) have tried the van version, though I don't recall the results. I eventually stopped using this tent because I have enough flat interior length (8+ ft) without opening the tailgate. This is especially true in shoulder season camping when I don't need...

Truck tent for compact trucks, $65 shipped...

This is the DAC Mid-Size campertop tent that Campmor sells for about $110. I've used this on my Element, though the tent is designed for an opening that is a bit wider and not as tall. I ended up adding a lower extension, made from gray poly tarp, to handle the greater opening height.

    Leavonworth, WA 12/12/09

A mining town in BC also took the Bavarian theme route, Kimberley. The theme shopping area is not a big as Leavenworth's. It does though have an adjacent ski resort.

Now if it was summer I'd suggest taking Old Blewett, which is the original paved route. It doesn't go over the same pass. There's a sno-park at the top of 97. And coming from the west you want the 970 turn off of I90 near Cle Elem. Oops, I see from...

As to route, I'd check WSDOT. They have current pass conditions, and web cams. Stevens Pass is highest and more likely to have fresh or compact snow. Blewett is almost as high, but overall drier. From Issaquah, I think I90 and 97 are more direct. Driving north to US2 could be slow, though...

Yakima tower and pad identification help.

Landingpad is Yakima's term for the part that works with the Control Tower. I find references on the web to Railrider1 and Railrider2, but not to separate vehicle adapters. Looks like you can buy the whole Railrider2 set on Ebay or dealers who have old stock, for around $50. If you want to...

Yakima tower and pad identification help.

It doesn't look quite the same as the current Control Tower design. The current one has two pins that spread outward, latching into the landing pad. But I agree that the pads are designed to work with a track on the vehicle. The oval 'washer' and 'H' one fit in the track. With the Control...

Why not enhance rounder AT tires with snow chains and similar devices?

Usually when the topic comes up on the Honda Element forum, owners in the eastern US and midwest say 'chains? what are those?'. In flat northern areas, snow tires are a better choice. It's mostly western mountainous states that have laws requiring chains. They vary from state to state...

    Caranex rear tents?

There are a number of tents with sleeves that fit over the back of a van or suv. Some appear to be based on run-of-the-mill family camping tents (poly floors etc). Cabelas sells one that may be better quality. Some auto makers sell this sort of tent, no doubt built and designed elsewhere...

    Wilderness Acreage in Utah

My conclusion, based on various descriptions of the lawsuits and motions, is that battle over Surprise Canyon is not about its (lack of) wilderness status (and/or character). The 2000 suit was based on the Endangered Species Act (and to a lesser degree, water quality). The counter motion...

    Wilderness Acreage in Utah

I looked up these two state reps. AAE is a lobbying group, pushing for things like more Peace River development in Wyoming (more generally energy projects in the USA). They don't have to reveal their money sources. Tilton is no longer a Representative. Instead he is prominent in a company...

    Wilderness Acreage in Utah

Here's an interesting article in High Country News about the litigation surround the Clinton era Roadless Rule, with particular focus on the Wyoming judge who has issued injunctions against it. Relevance to Utah is limited, since I believe the rule applied more to Forest Service land, as...

Who's this Karen Budd-Falen? A Wyoming lawyer specializing property rights cases and dealing with Federal agencies. She worked for the BLM in the Regan years. http://freedom21.org/conf/speakers01.html http://www.hcn.org/issues/304/15717 She has also represented a Wyoming rancher who was...

Why not enhance rounder AT tires with snow chains and similar devices?

One provincial park in central BC has this travel recommendation http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/junction/ I hit a spot of construction on a forest road in this general area. As soon as I left the gravel, my tires started to pick up a slick coating of clay. Fortunately I...

    Wilderness Acreage in Utah

SUWA's resource page regarding the Norton 2003 'no more wilderness' policy. The media packet has articles for major newspapers (SLT, NYT, LA,etc) from the time, generally describing it as a major change (reversal) in decades old Federal policy toward wilderness...

    Wilderness Acreage in Utah

You seem to see a direct connection between “Norton-Leavitt wilderness settlement” and ARWA. I haven't seen the full text of the settlement, but I gather that it did 2 things: - largely give the state and counties what they wanted with respect to the Civil War era road act. - tell the BLM to...

    Wilderness Acreage in Utah

Earlier this year I looked at the Omnibus that was passed in March. It was a collection of bills that had been under consideration for some years. I looked at a few of those. One dealt mostly with the Eastern Sierras. The sponsoring California Reps held town meetings in Mono and Inyo...

    North Cascades Loop (Washington State)

Snow photos from a week ago on the North Cascades Hwy http://www.flickr.com/photos/wsdot/sets/72157622777751870/ I'm guessing it is now closed for the season - unless this weeks Pineapple Express (warm heavy rain conditions) changes snow conditions significantly. Rain-on-snow compacts the...
