How important is it to "top off" my vehicle's starting battery (or deep cycle)?

I have had a bunch of Odysseys over the last ten or so years, and the Grp 34s have been generally trouble free, with no additional charging required. All the charging/maintenance issues I have had have been with the Odyssey Grp 31s. I'm just guessing that the pic was taken with the engine...

Best way to add bit of ground clearance?

The only way to get more ground clearance under the pumpkins is larger diameter tires. Period. End of statement, unless you want to go to portal axles. Which you don't. All the other lift tricks are snake oil unless you run bigger tires. The pumpkins will always be where they are in...

Best Way to Monitor a Battery Status for a single battery system?

I have two of those in my Power Wagon. A single for the starting battery, and a double for the house batteries. They are easy to install, but not very accurate. I carry a cheap multimeter for those times when I really want to know.

    Cooler Showdown

45C is actually pretty mild for southern AZ in late August and September. Last year on August 31 it was over 53C between Yuma and Gila Bend. And after I got the Orcas, I got an Indel B fridge to sit behind the driver's seat. I can keep frozen water bottles in there or an extra bag of ice, or...

    Cooler Showdown

I gotta disagree. I have half a dozen Coleman and Igloo "extreme" coolers (the ones that claim ice for 5 days at 90 degrees) and a couple of 58-qt Orca roto-molded coolers. The Orcas are waaaaay better in desert summer heat. Whether they are worth the money depends on your usage patterns and...

    New Headlights ordered......hella super 7s.

Bulbs. They seemed to throw the best light of any headlight I have owned, including factory and retrofit HIDs.

How long to idle truck to charge battery?

My old GMC K1500 is happily running two Optima 34/78 Yellows on a factory 105amp alternator. That alt went into the truck in East BFE when the high-amp custom alternator fried itself in the desert. Never felt the need to upgrade the alternator in that truck again after that experience.

    New Headlights ordered......hella super 7s.

I have a set of 7" Hella headlights that I have saved since probably the late 70's. The car they were on is long gone, but the lights were so good that I kept them. Don't know that I will ever be able to use them again, but I loved them.

How long to idle truck to charge battery?

You can probably get more capacity in a smaller package by going to a Grp 34. Might be able to fit a Grp 65. Your truck is a V6 gasser, right? Two battery boxes on the front core support, one right and one left? Truck came with a battery on one side and the other box empty? Original...

Thule bar awning mount. How'd you do it?

I fabbed up some brackets similar to the ones BentBomber shows. Couple chunks of big aluminum angle, some stainless 1/4-20 fasteners, and a little time with saw and file. My bars are Yakima, but I found that the two-hole EMT conduit clamps from Home Depot were a perfect fit around the bars...

How long to idle truck to charge battery?

Depends on the battery. Odysseys are full at 12.86 OCV. Optimas are full at 13.1 OCV or 13.2 OCV, depending on whether you have a starting or dual purpose Optima. Check your battery manufacturer's website for details. The cheapest way to test battery voltage is to get one of the...

    Plano Ammo Cans (plastic)

The gasket appears to be a different material than on the mil-spec cans, maybe a little stiffer than the originals. Cans are a tad lighter and the latches are easier to open, so seals might not be quite as tight, but seems adequate.

    Plano Ammo Cans (plastic)

I just bought four more yesterday at WalMart. They also had some knock-off steel "ammo cans" for $12.83 and I grabbed a couple of those. They are a decent copy of mil-spec cans, but they look better and don't smell funky. And I don't have to repaint them.

Questions on the installing a Yakima Rack on Leer Shell

The previously posted pic of mine with the bent bars and about 1100 pounds of lumber on the rack is on a standard SnugTop cab-high shell with standard Yakima rack components. I have carried heavy loads with some regularity for 18 years, no cracks or checks in the fiberglass. I looked at the...

    Hardware for Storage Solutions Projects

I have a heavy 60" deep drawer in my truck, and when I want to hold it open I just put a 2" spring clamp on the top edge. 99 cents at Home Depot, and it's always in the drawer.

    Plano Ammo Cans (plastic)

I have had a bunch of them for years. I use them mostly for temporary movement of tools and misc stuff when I need to go somewhere and don't want to take everything. They hold up pretty well, but are not as space-efficient as steel ammo cans. On the other hand, they are a lot cheaper and lighter.

Which fridge? I'm researching but a lot options out there!

It will change, until everything stabilizes. Stuff at the bottom always freezes first.

Which fridge? I'm researching but a lot options out there!

Indel B? FWIW I plugged mine into the truck yesterday after leaving it sitting for weeks in 100+ temperatures on the back seat. With a few bottles of water in it, the bottles at the bottom were starting to freeze after about 6 hours. And the bottles were warm when they went in.
