Desert Rat needs Winter Tire Recommendations

Commercial T/A We had the BFG "Commercial Traction T/A" on a 1 ton dually plow truck at work and the tires were awesome. I would highly recommend the tires and they seem to wear pretty well. At work the roads we maintained were chip sealed, and were hard on tires. The OEM Hankook tires on my...

    Hydrulic vs. Electric Winch

I have had a WARN 8274 and a WARN XD9000, but for some reason a Milemarker Hydrulic winch seems like a fun toy to try.

    Hydrulic vs. Electric Winch

Are their any real advantages to a hydrulic winch over an electric winch. I have used a number of electric winches on vehicles, but a hydrulic winch seems like it would be much more efficient on a truck.

Desert Rat needs Winter Tire Recommendations

Ltx m/s The LTX M/S is a pretty good performer in the snow/ice. I put 65,000 on a set that made it trough 4 Colorado winters on a Trooper. The only time the tread may be lacking is in the deep, deep snow. In deep, deep snow, a Mud Tire might perform a bit better, but is it really worth it...

    Re-tread tires

I had their older OTR Mud tires w/ green diamonds mounted on a TJ used as a daily driver. The tires saw speeds of 75-80 MPH on a regular basis and were aired down for off road operations with now problems. Make sure that you ask for a matched set of tires, and wait for off road tire donations...

    Medic Bags

    RSB's Radiant Red Tacoma build

Tire Side Why do you want the tire on the right side??? I would think that they had it correct on the left side behind the driver. If you are driving and look over your right shoulder when backing, now you are looking at your spare. If the spare is behind the driver, you will get a little more...

Tire chains, snow, mud, and airing down.....

Tire chains Tire chains are not the end all be all for everyone, but they are a useful winter tool. I have had a set of 4 for all my pervious trucks (Ford Bronco, Nissan Hardbody and Jeep TJ). On average, I was forced to chain up the vehicles about once every five years to get through a...

Help needed, 7" highbeam units, do they exist?

More I would mount these on the lower bumber: CIBIE CSR 5.75" Low Beam Headlights, Link: http://dsl.torque.net/products/csr.html I would then leave the stock headlights in place, and use the brights function from the stock headlights, and then wire the low beams as auxiliary headlights...

    Heating issues

check hoses a suburban should generate enough heat to heat the cabin, no problem. Check to make sure the heater hoses are connected to the rear heater core. Rather than replace a bad heater core, people will bypass it.

    Snow chains for 35"ers?

Chains at Costco.com If you are looking for tire chains, it appears that Costco.com has a pretty good deal going on for them at $115 I don't think they have any to fit 35" tires.

    Doc's 05 Tacoma Build Thread

Kill Switch Please post pictures once you have the lock box installed. You could also add a switch to your fuel pump inside the lock box, and it would make it very difficult for someone to borrow the truck.

    Vehicle Idling "neutral" vs "park"

I don't know exactly what vehicle it was. I was looking for deals at the the Denver DRMO at Rocky Mtn Arsonal in the mid 90's. Its just one of those weird items that stuck in my head. I was curious if it would be worth adopting the practice in my personal vehicle. And with the diverese...

    Vehicle Idling "neutral" vs "park"

OK - If you are forced to idle a vehicle with an automatic transmission for a long period of time while parked, is it better to but the vehicle in "neutral" or "park"? I remember being a passenger in a military CUCV and steciled on the dash was "DO NOT IDLE IN PARK"

    Auxiliary Light Plans - Suggestions?

Lights Good design, but I think you will be dissapointed with the performance of the "Fog" lights on the roof rack. The fog lights on the roof rack will produce a terrible glare on the hood. I tried to use a set of fog lights on a roof rack for auxiliary back up lights and they were terrible...

    Treadwrights and rain

Expo First Aid Kits-- What to Carry?

Good topic Building a med kit for expo travel is a good topic. Most Trauma Kits are good to patch people up for sever accidents, but what about a kit for long term/short term travel? OTC medications might be well worth the room.
