Help Building LR4 and locating HD Package

X2. I ended up buying a non-HD truck. The rest of it was too good to pass up. It literally checked all the marks except for the rear locker. Price, condition, history, 5 seat spec, dash pocket, and overall just a nice truck. That said, its going to work out in the end. Early next year I'll do...

Help Building LR4 and locating HD Package

Any SCV6 with low range will have the rear locker. Also, that 8 speed seems awesome. I've heard great things from guys who tow with it. Kind of want. I did some quick calcs and the gearing is just fabulous. To confirm when you see the vehicle, put it in off road height. Then use your...

Does the rep of "unreliable" still hold true?

Yeah I believe that on the local alignment shop. When they pulled my LR3 up on the rack, the first thing the guy did was put the car in "off road height". I'm like, Why you do this!!?? I fixed it and told him I locked the computer down (tight tolerance mode) and not to mess with the settings...

Does the rep of "unreliable" still hold true?

$1600 for tie rods!!?? I spent $75 on LH and RH side (from LRDirect) combined and had it all wrapped up in about 2 hours. Spent $130 for a 3 year alignment warranty at Pep Boys. Good to go. Seriously Tie Rods on a LR3 are easy.

Does the rep of "unreliable" still hold true?

So far my LR3 has been reliable. That said, it has been maintenance heavy. They will require significant coin at 30k and 60k routinely. If you can work on it yourself, that also helps out A TON on price. So far the only thing I haven't done is the transmission service (massive pain) and the...

    Gap IID Tool: First go.

Just programmed my new keys using the GAP tool. Dealer wanted either $75 or $125 (can't remember) PER KEY for programming (I have two new keys). Took me less time to find a youtube video, sit there in anxiety, then re-read the instructions, then perform the reprogram, than it would've taken me...

    2006 LR3 Oil Question

Castrol Edge full synthetic is great. Go with that. Check Wal-Mart, local auto parts stores for deals. Also check Amazon. Keep in mind, you will need 8-9 quarts (I forget). I just get two jugs. Also after changing the oil, check the oil level. Then after a short drive, check it again! I know...

    2006 LR3 Oil Question

I was reading the owners manual in my LR3, and nowhere does it say I have to put synthetic in. So I'm running just normal castrol dyno oil. I'll change mine out every 3k. It isn't a DD, so that really equates to 2x a year (assuming I don't do a big cross country trip with it). Also looking at...

    VHF/UHF HT for emergency use?

Many variances. Here in the big city, I find ham to be of little help, really. The once every 4 years when we have a disaster it'll become relevant, that that is it. A "good" HT (for reference, I'll use my Icom ID-51, since that is what I'm basing all of this off of) can hit repeaters easily...

Need Advise on a new brake setup

What car? My friend just got the "high end" brake kit from rock auto for his LR3. Slotted/drilled rotors, etc. So far seems like a good setup. On my LR3, I'll be going with Akebono brake pads. Highly recommended to me for performance and minimizing brake dust. I just picked up an AB rear brake...

Rebuilding our Defender 110 into an overland 'camper'

Awesome! My only suggestions is to get the vehicle in top mechanical condition. This solves so many problems when you don't have breakdowns all the time. The old diesels are robust, simply changing the filters and keeping it serviced will go a long way. So many people don't even do this and then...

    GAP IID tool

Get the manual on PDF, then read about setting it up. After that, just search/use table of contents to pick out the pieces you need. That is what I did.

LR3 Lower arms and inner/outer tie rod cost

Makes me glad I'm doing most of my work myself. I'm looking at doing pads and rotors all the way around. It'll be $300-450 for parts alone (probably will go 450, looks like better stuff and new wear sensor). Fronts are dead easy. Rears will be a toss up. Also I'll go ahead and bleed the system...

    Gap IID Tool: First go.

Just used mine for real last yesterday (finally got it setup). Oh for those looking to buy the tool, set it up, etc with your laptop BEFORE you need it. Between reading instructions and running back and forth to the car, took about 30 minutes. If I knew what I was doing, I'm sure it would've...

    LR3 Brake Light Bulbs

Stupid question: what is the best brand, etc for LR3 brake light bulbs for the tail lights? I've tried a few, but they all seem to not be as bright or not last long. I've heard there is some special requirements that are probably the root of my issue. Thanks everyone.

    RRC Bottle Jack

I think the D2 ones are a bit bigger. But yes, they'll work if it'll fit. Excellent unit, used it many times. It is the "double stage" type. Could be the same, hard to tell. But its the same one from a D1 if that ballparks you.

What are some of the most reliable old vehicles?

Old chevy and Ford trucks. Especially those with fuel injection, even the early TBI units. It all boils down to dealing with torn seats, broken door latches, worn bushings, a bit of burning oil, leaky seals, and worn tires after that.

Towing an “adventure trailer” with disco I or II?

It'll do it...kinda. Not all that great. You'll know its back there the entire time. I've towed a pretty hefty uhaul from Philly back to NC. Not very fun. The 02 Yukon Denali handled a similar load A LOT better. Pay the extra and get an LR3. They are beasts both off road and towing.

    LR3 cracked dashboard thread

Update on the carpet dash pad. Its actually functional. I can easily leave my hat up there and it won't fall. Same with my GPS, it fell off the window (suction mount) a few times, but didn't slide off. But a phone will, however I've got the dash pocket instead of the screen, so no issues there...
