Long distance off-road capable moto hauler…

For what its worth, I built my flatbed out of 14ga 1.5 square tube with 14ga sheet deck. Came out to 440lbs for 90"x90". Pretty light for steel, had a few people claim it wouldn't last 6 months. I've had a ton on it several times, regularly haul 1200 lbs. Pushed it into trees on tight trails...

Looking at this 4x4 Crew Cab to start a build.

Certainly potential in that, it will need more clearance without a doubt. I'm partial to Fords but that's more from familiarity than anything. What draws you to the Chevy, specifically, that can't happen with the Ford you already own?

    235/85/16? Let's see them

Little update: 65psi was too high, and wearing the tire centers. I'm now down to 42psi rear 40psi front with even wear, and no undue tire heat. Speaking of wear, I'm getting ~2400 miles per 1/32 of tread, not great but could be worse. The truck weighs roughly 6500lbs on a trip, nearly balanced...

    inexpensive 12v tire inflator

I have an mv50 or mf1050, whatever the amazon compressor is. I tested it out of the box, then cleaned up the head and generally checked assembly. No real difference there. Recently replaced the cord with quality 10ga marine wire, that actually did make a difference. I air down roughly once a...

    1982 Fleet Flatbed Conversion Project

I've been fortunate to be able to get out fairly frequently. Summer just started though, hopefully you can get out and enjoy it! Someday I will make it to Canada, and Alaska. Do you fish up there? Which province? My mother visited recently, and it happened to be during the wettest forecast...

    1982 Fleet Flatbed Conversion Project

The rear axle is locked up now. Wow, what a difference! I put an Aussie locker in the Ford 8.8", and it seems the truck is more capable as a true 2x4 than it ever was in "4x4". In 4-low with the hubs locked and aired down to 20psi this thing feels very capable. After driving Hagerman Pass with...

    eBay 20% off Jun6 only

Yes, thank you. Lunchbox locker on the way for my rear axle. It was on my "buy" list so this was a nice savings.

    1982 Fleet Flatbed Conversion Project

While continuing to brainstorm on a three point mount, I reworked the kitchen area last week and then went for a trip near home. There's more counter space than before, it's easier to clean, has more storage, holds everything much more securely, and generally looks a lot better. I don't have...

    popup vs hardtop

Hard side popup? The side entry Alaskan flatbed sure looks nice. I do really like the low weight of my old flatbed FWC and have zero complaints in summer, but when the temperature really sinks the condensation leaves me wondering about a better insulated setup.

    Low Fuel indicator

Post #2 outlines how to check fuel economy best. Using the gauge is not nearly accurate enough. Also note, it is not wise to run electric fuel pump systems low on fuel. The pump is cooled by the liquid fuel itself, and frequently running very low can shorten pump life.

    1982 Fleet Flatbed Conversion Project

I've come to the conclusion hard mounting the flatbed is not going to work long term. I've found cracks in the front two mounts (6 mounts total), from the twisting of the truck frame over ditches/washes/rocks/etc. I don't know when it cracked; but glad it wasn't the truck frame cracking. Nothing...

    1982 Fleet Flatbed Conversion Project

With some good weather on tap for the weekend, and a Friday chock full of meetings, I was itching to get out. So Friday night, after a quick mtb bike ride, I grabbed some food, a 6 pack, biking & running/hiking gear, and a tank of fuel and left town. I had never climbed Laramie Peak so I headed...

2001 GMC 2500 HD Flatbed Camper Build

Cool project! What's the plan for mounting the flatbed to the truck frame?

    1982 Fleet Flatbed Conversion Project

The solar panel was mounted a week and half ago. I had aluminum angle on hand, and used that to make a mounting system that will hold up to 3 100W panels, though I suspect 100W will suite my current needs easily.

    1982 Fleet Flatbed Conversion Project

Little update. I made a nicer battery box with a small storage cubby. I did this because I am installing a 100w solar panel and wanted a better place to put the charge controller. The lid is held on with velcro, nice and simple. I went with a GreeSonic 15A mppt controller and Renogy panel. 15A...

    Flatbed questions -Ram 2500 ccsb

That modular type setup is pretty trick, and similar to what I'd like to do, albeit with a different mounting setup. I too haul firewood with the truck in the fall, then snowmobiles on the flatbed in the winter. Summer time I just camp & mtn bike. So I'm planning to swap to a lighter camper...

    Flatbed questions -Ram 2500 ccsb

I don't know what your build plans are, or if you travel light/heavy, but if you engineer weight into the equation I think you can make this work. I fab'd a steel flatbed, 90"×90" on my old supercab short box F150, along with an old FWC Fleet that I rebuilt as a flatbed model. Half tank of fuel...

    Floor insulation ideas... FWC

My FWC rebuild has a steel tubed floor frame with 1" XPS between the tubes, sandwhiched with 6mm ply on top and 3/4" ply below. It's better insulated than the roof! I hate cold feet... Hard to do that without a full floor pack rebuild though. You could place a sheet of XPS under the camper...

FWC Fleet on Full Size pick up..Real world pics or opinions

I've got an old Fleet on my shortbox flatbed F150. The Fleet was converted to a flatbed, but the toolbox setup would be cool too. Camper is 90" long and flatbed has 88.5" usable length, so it hangs off the back a little. The camper is very close to the cab width. I'm a fan of having the lighter...
