    Mercedes 814DA

Sorry for the delay responding. Many thanks for the comments. Had a few requests for more details of the truck: Mercedes T2/Vario 814 DA Cargo Van - Registered 1997 GVW 7500 kg - Fitted with OM364LA engine type – Euro 2 (no ECU). Permanent 4 wheel drive – High/Low box with 2 diff locks...

Pre birth of a camper - No laughing!

Hi Ian, Been around tootling around Europe for a couple of months this summer. Fuel was so much more expensive than SA! A couple of observations about mpg - if I stick to the "green zone" rpm (for me that's a max of 55mph @ 2200rpm) I can return around 28mpg. If I try and press to 2500rpm this...

    Handling problem - Help!

Quite right, Stratford Racecourse, I'll be there. I think it's important to get the pressures right and to make sure you're mechanically sound. However, in the end I do think this could be a characteristic of driving a HGV with a fairly high centre of gravity that you'll get used to (or won't...

814 DA on the road in South America

Pierre, I had no end of problems with hose/jubilee joints coming apart, I put this down to the lack of an expansion tank. Having discussed this with Sure Cal technical department they recommend plastic pipe with push fit connections as the pressures in a engine fed calorifier system can exceed 4...

    Handling problem - Help!

Ian, Don't know if you saw it but I posted what sounds like the same problem with my truck after the single wheel conversion. I was unable to resolve the issue and after a few thousand miles just got used to it (or it got better). I did take it to an old airfield and threw it around a bit...

Pre birth of a camper - No laughing!

I think the OM364LA is around 110HP. Mine is permanent 4x4. I've calculated the MPG a couple of times with similar results. However I did have to use the GPS for the mileage so there is considerable room for error. I'm no expert but I do wonder if manufacturers, when trying to get older designs...

Pre birth of a camper - No laughing!

Ian I generally cruise at around 55 mph (reading around 50 mph on the speedo due to larger tyres) this at around 2100 rpm. This returns around 20 mpg (which I think is 14l/100km). My truck is fitted with the OM364LA engine in Euro II configuration. Even fully loaded (6000kg) it handles hills...

814 DA on the road in South America

Alastair, After reading your post I've been playing around with bits of plywood fitted to our hatch which is in the middle of the vehicle. I think turning the hatch around so that it scoops air is going to work! Thanks for taking the time to post.

    Mercedes 814DA coolant leak?

Found it! Not excessive expansion just a stupid leaking union.

    Mercedes 814DA coolant leak?

Going to give the can under the overflow a try on my next run as suggested. No markings on my piping - Looks like black rubber radiator hose. If excessive expansion is the problem not sure what I can do about it apart from replacing the pipes or increasing the size of the tank. Either job...

    Mercedes 814DA coolant leak?

Got a problem I’m hoping someone may be able to help with. I’m losing around 2 or 3 litres of coolant per day (of driving). The truck’s never overheated and I’ve been unable to locate an obvious leak. On a couple of occasions I’ve spotted a tiny pool of water under the truck in a position that...

Ian - Do you think you'll make it to Adventure Overland? I want a closer look at your truck, it looks fantastic in the pictures! You must be well pleased with the final build weight.

814 DA on the road in South America

Getar – Good luck with your tyre choice. Given the benefit of hindsight I think I got way too caught up in the single wheel conversion debate. Maybe I should have kept the twin wheel and just fitted larger tyres? Anyway the truck looks great (IMO) and it drives just fine on tarmac. I can't...

814 DA on the road in South America

Great suggestion Alastair. I'm going to give it a go when I get the van back from South America. Given that I normally drive with the front windows open I think it unlikely that I can create a positive pressure but a suitably sized fan should at least balance the negative pressure. The air...

814 DA on the road in South America

Not home yet. On the Rambla in Montevideo and it's freezing! Take the point regarding modifying the heater. I still think I'd want an alternative just in case. In our case our genny will run a fan heater. Wish I'd had the nerve to try lowering the pressure down to that level. On the other...

814 DA on the road in South America

Some random thoughts on avoidable conversion issues after 3 months on the road in South America. Screws: Loctite is your friend. The wood screws have been fine but I should think around 40 engineering screws have fallen out of various control panels, appliances and fittings. Tyres: I’m sure...
