Added Auxiliary Heater - now there's no heat!?

This is a re-post from the GENERAL VEHICLE MODIFICATION forum, but as it may pertain specifically to a Nissan vehicle I chose to place it here as well. I recently installed an auxiliary heater in the canopy of my 2010 Nissan Frontier. This is a simple coolant-type heater which is tied into the...

Added Auxiliary Heater - now there's no heat!?

I recently installed an auxiliary heater in the canopy of my 2010 Nissan Frontier. This is a simple coolant-type heater which is tied into the heater hose in the engine bay. As long as the engine is running at ~1800rpm or higher, there is excellent heat produced in both the cab and canopy...

Yes. I believe they are #8 hex-head screws. The steel was pre-drilled with 5/32" holes. Screws spun in pretty nicely with an impact-drill and sucked up nice and tight. I also ran a small bead of construction adhesive between the tubing and the ply for a little extra strength. I'm sure it wasn't...

Having a longer wheel-base is great for more storage/sleeping space, but I often find the extra vehicle length hinders off-road clearance and maneuverability. Wouldn't change it though! All the time spent designing and building this system has been well worthwhile!

Better LATE than NEVER! Well, it's been a little better than a month since we returned from our trip and it seems that I have been far too busy with other things and have struggled to get these extra pictures that were requested. So ... here you go! Roller Bearing Slide Details: Side Shot...

Additional pictures To all who have requested additional pictures of the drawer slides, latches, wiring, engine-bay connection/bypass - these are coming. I promise. We only returned from our trip on Sunday night and; as most of you will understand, there is a lot of unpacking and...

The water tank came from a local RV parts supplier. I was told that it is a pretty common size for campers, etc.

The fridge/bed slides were designed and built exactly the same as the drawer slides. There are a series of roller bearings which support a length of 1' square tubing which is attached to the side of the slides. You can see the bearings and a side shot of the drawer in the pictures posted...

The drawers have a small retainer pin in the rear of the drawer that will strike the catch for the latch if it is pulled out all of the way. You just have to pull this pin up to clear the catch and the drawer can be removed. I am still working on a stopper for the top bed-slides but have yet...

We chose to use Birch plywood because it is stronger and stiffer than it's spruce counterparts. Being a hardwood, birch plywood also has excellent surface hardness and wear-resistance. And of course - the surface grain looks great with a coat of clear varnish! MDO is great to work with. I've...

Apologies It has been raining here for the last few days and has proven difficult to take the few pictures that have been requested. Hopefully there will be a break in the sky today! Otherwise, these will need to wait until our return from Alaska.

I consulted with a few people about the copper fittings before proceeding. The general consensus was that the copper would actually be MORE reliable than hoses because it is simply a more secure joint. Obviously, the copper fitting have only been used where I am confident they will not sustain...

The DreamTime pads are amazing. How can you beat 3.5 inches of comfort with a removable, machine washable cover? The support of a traditional Thermarest with the extra comfort of a memory foam topper ... no complaints here! The pillows are also made by Thermarest. As mentioned, we've been...

The carpet was ordered from LEER at the same time we ordered our canopy. We chose this because it is un-backed and stretches easily into tight corners and around small contours like the access hatches. You can sometimes source similar carpets at car stereo shops too. Here's a quick link to a...

I won't lie - the drawers definitely effect how much room we have in there! The platform is just over 10" high. This leaves us with enough room to crawl in easily and sit up enough to change clothes, etc. It's "cozy"! We've spent many nights in much smaller tents, so we're fine with this set-up...
