    Antenna/Roof rack

Gutter mounts will rip off when fighting trees and other solid, immovable objects. Definitely for safety and security drill a hole. No reason not to. From a pure physics standpoint that antennas stick is half an antenna. Where is the other half? It's the vehicle. Need to have a strong...

2013 Toyota 4Runner, Equipt Edition Build

Paul, The wife and I are starting the hunt for a new vehicle. We are leaning towards the 4Runner Trail which is why I enjoy this thread so much. One of the things we have talked about is the comparison between the Land Cruiser and 4 Runner Trail. Just curious... Comfort and Power versus Cost...

Comet SS-460SB NMO or Larsen NMO-2/70SH??? Is One "Better?"

Open coil due to flexibility and easier to keep clean. Nothing for water to gather in. I have had one for several years. Thing is in better shape than my truck. Just do it. It only hurts the first time :)

    Antenna/Roof rack

Go read K0BG's web page. Then install a Breedlove mount. Then ham sticks or a 102" whip on the trail or a screwdriver elsewhere. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

New to HAM and almost there....

I second local ham clubs. Repeater directories help give you an idea what might be there but not if it works or is popularly used. In AZ look up the cactus intertie (check the name locally to make sure I called it the right thing) on UHF. That is a linked system all over the place and even out...

    Question about the Comet SBB-5

Something to consider based on your perceived need, the same I had a while ago, is are you needing a higher gain antenna or and higher takeoff antenna. I used to live in Northern VA and had issues hitting local repeaters in the urban jungle. No problem hitting the machine 70 miles away though...

    Question about the Comet SBB-5

The NMO270B is fantastic and indestructible. Had one for over five years and never a leak or swr issues. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Comet SS-460SB NMO or Larsen NMO-2/70SH??? Is One "Better?"

You will never go wrong with a properly installed Larson. The imports have always fallen apart on me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    traveled to india?

I've been. A college roommate got married in Tamil Nadu a few yrs ago (2006). Before the wedding did a ten+ day sprint through south India. Traveled from Chennai to Kochin. Then Kochin through a breathtaking national park and tea plantations back to Pudakattai (sp). From there did the wedding...

    Comms Clarification Questions

Thanks for the replies. I kinda suspected that but it caught me as odd. Might just be a local thing in that area of the country. Great threads and someday I hope to be able to contribute a bit more.

    Comms Clarification Questions

I am new to overlanding but not ham radio. I am an Extra Class op licensed more than 20 yrs ago. My overlanding is generally a rough path to a field day site. With 2 kids growing up that is something my wife and I want to change. We want them playing in the dirt and exploring things not on TV if...

    Overlanding Checklist

This is a good find and I appreciate all the info here. I might add this link since it was after the list here was done being made: http://overlandbound.com/overland-checklist/ I think the thing missing on all the checklists is this: Know how to use everything on the list. It's great to have...

2013 Toyota 4Runner, Equipt Edition Build

CB antennas (assuming 11m and not GMRS) are perfect on the bumper due to length and frequency. (Will spare the physics.) 2m aka VHF High Band is what he has. Need it up high because it'll mostly be line of sight. If mounted low you may not hit that distant repeater or hear your buddy at a...

2013 Toyota 4Runner, Equipt Edition Build

Anytime and thanks for your hard work and great documentation. Don't need a spring just a simple base loaded whip. Larsen makes on. All the weight of the coil is at the mount. The radiator flops and flexes nicely. Good luck and can't wait to learn more here! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

2013 Toyota 4Runner, Equipt Edition Build

Recent viewer, 20+ yr ham, and first time commenter. I want to start by thanking you for your attention to detail in documenting your build. I am hoping to get a 4Runner once I hit the lottery. Wife wants it as much as I do which helps. This has been hugely educational for a me, the non-...
