2012 Yukon XL 2500 Overland Build

That's a sweet Yukon. My in-laws have that exact truck sitting in their drive way for their big trips (aka hardly gets used but gets baked in the AZ sun). Hopefully I can get my hands on it someday. I saw that shock video but didn't realize it was you.

    2013 Ford Raptor SuperCrew build

Where in Baja are you going? My dream is to spend a few weeks down there camping from secluded beach to secluded beach. Gotta make some additions to the Ex before that can happen though.

    2000 Mercury Mountaineer Build

I thought I had seen this thing on dezertrangers but it must be a green one that looks similar. My rig would be a long term project but when it gets there I'll definitely reach out. Two questions- -Is the roof rack something special or just the mountaineer version? I like the slope the side...

    2000 Mercury Mountaineer Build

That's an awesome mountaineer. I have been following your build on other forums so it's great to see it here and nice to see another SF Bay Area explorer. Explorers are rarer on this site and I'm not sure why. I went with a 93 to get the non OHC 4.0L and the TTB. It's going to be a mild...

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

It was cheap! The hood and roof paint are faded but will be repainted soon. The headliner has some rips in it but the rest of the interior looks pretty much new. I walked away with it for.........$1400. That allowed the wheel and tire, stereo and speakers, and shocks purchase.

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

Thank you. Yeah I bought it because it was mechanically what I wanted (TTB front end, 8.8 rear and the gears and LSD) and mechanically perfect. It needs some cosmetic work and some key upgrades but it should do exactly what I want.

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

Picture of it so far. Stereo, speakers, Bilstein 4600 for the front and Monroe Load Adjust for the rear to be installed soon

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

Thank you! It was nice to end up in a Ford and with the suspension that I wanted (I want a bronco some day for the same reason). It wont be getting too many mods besides wheels, tires, stereo, maybe some clear outer lights and led interior lights. In a while it will get fiberglass fenders...

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

Figured I'd follow up on this for everyone who helped. I ended up getting a 93 Explorer. It had only 105k on it! While it doesn't have the best engine power wise it is a fairly bullet proof drivetrain (once you get a trans cooler) that can be modified for long travel pretty easy for the future...

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

Grand Cherokee- Do I go for the 96-98 ZJ or the 99-04 WJ (both 4.0L)? The WJ will cost more so it will stay stock longer or will have higher miles. It has the slightly stronger 4.0L, slightly better mpg and more second row room. The ZJ will probably be cheaper and is more prevalent in my price...

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

After looking into the actual mileage people are getting with the 4.0l vs 5.2l (2-3 mpg worse on avg), the fact that this vehicle will never have bigger than 31-32s, and the less desirable transfercase with the v8 I will probably end up with a 4.0l. Not having extra power will also mean I won't...

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

Directly comparing the GC and E shows them to be much closer than I thought. With the explorer I would be limiting myself to 3 years to get the specific engine/trans combo I want. The GC I could do a 4.0l or a 5.2l. The 5.2 gets me a stronger trans and rear end with probably a 1-2 mpg hit but...

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

I love the huge aftermarket for the GC. The problem is I would have to take purchase or maintenance money away to put a BB or probably upcountry v8 coils and shocks under it to get 31's to fit whereas with the Explorer or Montero or Montero Sport they can fit those stock. The drivetrain of the...

    Montero vs Montero Sport

That's good to know. I don't have my mind set on those years so if there's a benefit to the newer ones I'll focus that way.

    Montero vs Montero Sport

I chose those years mainly for the simplicity and load capacity of leaf springs. Realistically any sport that is in decent condition and the right miles would work. However if I were to get a newer 3.5l then it'd make more sense to just get the true Montero IMO. I have looked into something...

    Montero vs Montero Sport

I'm going to bring this back instead of starting a whole new thread. I am also debating a montero vs a sport. Years would be 97-99 for Sport and 96-99 for Montero. It would be a DD with snow, camping, fire trails, dunes, and desert driving (90% city, 8% highway, 2% off road). From my research...

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

I would say that my choices are narrowed down to either the explorer or a full size montero. The explorer is common and with the aftermarket support has the potential to make a great long lasting adventure truck with the right mods. The montero is a strong, dependable vehicle right out of the...

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

The epa numbers are around 12/16/12 and fuelly says an avg of 13. At that mpg I would get a expedition like my last one. It was perfect except for the cost of going anywhere. The vehicles I'm looking at should average around 15-17.

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

I have looked into those a little. There's two problems- 1. The diesels are getting expensive with the recent craze going on pushing them outside my budget. 2. Ideally I'd like a 4 door for general ease of using the back seat. If a two door would work I'd probably buy a Bronco and just live with...

4 Vehicle Choice for Budget SUV

Interesting update- I added a 97 explorer to my comparison chart. Highlights- heaviest, most second row room, longest wheelbase and overall length, most torque, biggest brakes and 4 wheel abs. With my rating system it won by 1 point over the GC. Most categories the true measurements were very...
