Big Green Camper spotted, MB truck?

On Saturday I was working at the Cherohala Challenge bike ride on the Tail of the Dragon, highway 129, at the East Tennessee and North Carolina border. A big light green camper came through and tooted at me. By the time I turned around I could only see a forward cab-over truck with nice big...

    My M1079 Plan

Your NG FMTVs must have the CAT C7 engine. It is electronic and programmable. Going over recommended rpm is at your own risk. The earlier FMTV engines, CAT 3116 and 3126 are mechanical and really don't tolerate over-rev'ing. With known issues of driveline imbalance, over-speeding can break...

    Simple radio

The Kenwood TM-281A is about as simple as modern radios get. You can dial the frequency in, or you can coarse dial the MHz digit then fine tune the kHz digits. I do not know of any radio that lets you 'dial in' the tone frequency from the front panel. They all require a menu item selection...

Thanks! Makes sense to me now. I should read the manual!

Picked up a refurbished Yeti 400

What kind of magical device can have 31 Watts input and put out 68 Watts? :-) I want several of those to cut down my electric bill. Seriously, what do those numbers show?

    Unimog 404 help?

If you want the uniqueness of a Unimog, prefer to keep the truck small(er), can live with few creature comforts, don't mind routine maintenance, and slowing down the pace on road is ok, then the 404 is a great truck. They are very reliable, tough, simple to maintain, and lots of parts...

Swing Fire Gas Heater on Unimog 404 Operation

I like that pop-top radio box. There is probably old gas residue in the tank and lines. Tank will come off to clean filter in top. First rule with these heaters, by the time you pump enough to start it, you will be warm! Although some people are better at starting theirs than I am!!

New to group. Just got my two ex firetruck extended cab U1300l's

Cedarsurf, you probably already figured this out but the "kill button" on the floor is the air actuated exhaust brake. The manual does mention using the exhaust brake to stop the engine at idle but consider this: You can kill the engine manually by reducing the manual throttle lever to zero...

Free hi-lift from my dead uncle's shed, sitting 30+ yrs, safety check/refurb?

That's a classic old jack you have there. A little oil as the guys have said, and use it. Safeguard it on your vehicle or I will steal it :-)

Cost of equipment: then and now (CB, Ham, etc.) what did you pay?

Workingonit71, what a nice idea for a thread! I have thought your thoughts too, what a bargain we have today. I bought a used Hallicrafters CB in the early 60's, a model CB-3, I think. Paid something like $60 for it. That was a lot of money then. My first real ham radio was a Hallicrafters...

Need a little antenna help. 2m/70cm

The Larsen is a robust antenna (and the only brand I will buy) but having the open coil will be a headache if you pass any limbs, even small ones. The coil will catch the limbs. I put a new dual band Larsen on my truck a couple of months ago, went to the woods, and never saw the antenna again...

steel mesh for mobile 2/70 antenna?

Hi Sonoronos, I hope I have simply misunderstood some of your comments. First, an antenna fits somewhere between a device that radiates radio energy perfectly, and one that radiates nothing (like a dummy load). Both those extremes, and all in between, can have 50 Ohm resistive response and...

Pics of mobile HF antenna installs

How does that perform? The radiating part of a Scorpion goes all the way down to the bottom, to just above the mounting and grounding base. By wrapping the steel frame around the radiating antenna, mounting it close to the door, and then closing the spare on top of it, has to have a serious...

    2006 Stewart & Stevenson/BAE 6x6 Build

Hi Charlie, The FMTV's aren't Unimogs, meaning of course that there are compromises with the FMTVs. Your questions are good ones. But, for a 'less than Unimog' vehicle, the FMTV's do very well. As you know I have been around Unimogs a long time. Nothing beats the crawl ratio, portal axles...

    Early Alaskan!

Moe gives excellent advice. I have a 1970 10 ft NCO (non-cabover) and it looks very similar. The better half and I have used it for 8 years and it still serves us well. I did, however, just find a 2002 Alaskan 10' NCO to go on another truck and it sure is an upgrade. Funny thing though, the...

    M1078 LMTV expedition vehicle build

For what it's worth, I'm presently on a trip (3000 miles so far) in a '1078. In the same convoy is an M-1083. At last fillup we compared fuel usage after same exact mileage, same driving conditions, road, temp, etc, (well, it's in a convoy!). We had both filled up at the last fuel stop. I...

    M1078 vx. Mitsubishi FUSO 4x4

Some comments on statement made a few posts back. Hundreds of FMTV's have been released in the last couple of years. Many do have relatively minor initial problems because these were the bottom of the bucket trucks. That's the nature of getting a truck out of your military pool, you kick...
