12V plugs and sockets that are not cigarette lighter style

Me neither, and I posted it. I think it is a forum bug where they try to give a preview of the amazon pages. Not sure how to post a link without this happening. If you search for '2 pin circular connector' on amazon you will see lots of option. Edited the previous post to make the links work.

12V plugs and sockets that are not cigarette lighter style

I feel like this discussion comes up every few months. I am personally not a fan of either Anderson or SAE connectors. SAE connectors only come in a molded form, meaning you need to splice the wire provided with the connector, and don't lock in anyway. Anderson connectors don't have a very...

Thoughts on this trailer power system.

We are all entitled to our own opinions. I will leave this here for others to decide on which device looks intuitive and up to date:

Thoughts on this trailer power system.

Primarily because it was developed in the 90's, remains essentially unchanged, and is missing a bunch of modern and convenient features. They were the bees knees back in the day, but have not kept up. More modern monitors provide a much improved user interface, both in terms of physical...

Thoughts on this trailer power system.

For battery monitoring: https://www.victronenergy.com/battery-monitors/bmv-712-smart For Charging: https://www.victronenergy.com/solar-charge-controllers/mppt7510 If the trimetric is returnable, I would consider it. They are ancient tech.

Thoughts on this trailer power system.

Two related notes - Odysseys are good batteries that are great for high loads, but not really great for deep cycling, so you definitely want to keep them above 50% as much as you can so as to get your moneys worth. Secondly, unless you are reusing the Trimetric and already have it, there are...

Thoughts on this trailer power system.

The better battery manufacturers will provide a table with run time vs current the captures the Peukert effect. Here is an example from Odyssey: https://www.odysseybatteries.com/docs/us-ody-tm.pdf If you scroll down to their 100Ah battery you will see that it will provide 1hr of run time at a...

Inmarsat BGAN (Broadband Global Internet Network) Terminal and Iridium Phone

I have used a BGAN, they (mostly) work, they are not very fast and they are expensive. Expect 200 - 500 kbps, $5-$10 per MB.

    Poor man's Aux battery charger

Unfortunately the controller wouldn't see 15 or 16V until your battery is boiling as the battery is setting the voltage in this circuit. The controller would also reach the absorb voltage of 14.X before it reached any voltage limit, so the max voltage limit wouldn't actually do anything...

    Poor man's Aux battery charger

This is correct. A PWM controller will NOT work in this situation. Remember how a PWM controller works, for the bulk part of the charge the PWM controller doesn't do anything - it is fully on all the time. So in this situation it would be the same as connecting the DC-DC converter directly...

Can the iPad really be used as an out-of-signal range, off-road GPS device?

In the case above, I don't think the iPhone is passing the iPad anything and there is no GPS involved. The iPad is estimating it's own position based on a database of Wifi MAC addresses. If the iPad can see a router with MAC address xx:xx:xx:xx it then queries the database to see where...

Can the iPad really be used as an out-of-signal range, off-road GPS device?

That is the iPad using the Wifi positioning based on recognizing WiFi networks. It has nothing to do with the phone GPS. If you look at Gaia on the phone, you will notice that it is using GPS in this scenario, so clearly it is available but not passing it on to the iPad. I use my Gaia on my...

Can the iPad really be used as an out-of-signal range, off-road GPS device?

I am pretty sure that is NOT actually the case. See the discussion here: https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/ipad-not-receiving-gps-like-it-should.222680/ However, I would be very happy to be shown to be wrong on this one.

Can the iPad really be used as an out-of-signal range, off-road GPS device?

I use a Wifi only iPad Pro with an inReach to provide the GPS position to the iPad. This works seamlessly. I also regularly (as in most of the time) forget to grab the inReach out of my backpack after a hike and will leave the backpack either in the back seat of my crewcab, or in my...

iPad not receiving GPS like it should

For giggles I gave this a go between my iPhone with the latest version of GPS2IP and Wifi iPad running Gaia - and no dice. It does not appear to provide GPS positions to location services on the iPad, therefor Gaia cannot use it. It appears that others have asked Gaia to add a GPS via IP/UDP...

iPad not receiving GPS like it should

I tried this a couple of years ago and BLE was not an option at that point. I can update the app, try again and report back. To some degree this is academic as I have an inReach, but it has just bugged me that this is not a default option when a Wifi iPad is tethered to an iPhone.

iPad not receiving GPS like it should

I actually bought and tried this app, and yes it works to provide the GPS position over TCP or UDP, but it will only provide a position solution to apps that can be configured to look for position via these ports - which seems to be limited to some rather obscure marine and APRS apps. I also...

iPad not receiving GPS like it should

Not that it would help in this situation, but another option to provide GPS to a Wifi only iPad is a Garmin InReach. If you pair the iPad with the inReach it will provide GPS just like the Dual or GLO units. If you already have an inReach, this is a free solution. I use it with a Wifi iPad...

    Polar Wire Products

I have used Polar wire in applications that require flexibility at very low temperatures (in Antarctica). In that application it is absolutely the right stuff to use, so if you have an application that will experience super cold temperatures (< -20C or so) AND you will be bending the...

Solar Wiring question - gauge and connector type?

Exactly right. You will notice I said 'system' not 'controller' to not confuse folks even further.
