Solar panels, fixed to the roof, adjustable on the roof, or portable?

We will be staying and playing more, but a lot of that will also be hunts in Northern Alberta and Canada in the fall when daylight is short and furnace runs a bit more at night. I think I'll stick with 300+ watts of capacity and weld an aluminum frame for all three panels that is pinned on both...

12 volt or 6 volt batteries?

What I meant by a "marine battery" is a deep cycle battery for marine use on Electric trolling motors. THey're used for a true draw down use. We have two suppliers locally that I can get lead acid Golf Cart specific batteries from. Thanks for the input.

12 volt or 6 volt batteries?

Sounds good folks. I think I'll just bite the bullet and get 2 good quality 6V GC2 batteries. They should give me all the capacity I need and are only about $25.00 more than a good marine 12V deep cycle battery.

12 volt or 6 volt batteries?

Room isn't much of an issue. I'm custom building my expedition camper on a 14 foot uhaul box. Also wondering if two large 12v would be better as I'd have have twice the capacity?

12 volt or 6 volt batteries?

I wish our batteries were priced like you fellas down in the states. I'm seeing 60-80.00 in the US for GC2 batteries. Here the cheapest 220ah GC2 is 189.99!

12 volt or 6 volt batteries?

I'm not sure what the pros and cons are of going with eith 2, 6's or 2, 12,s? I'm looking at 6 or 12 volt golf cart batteries or just big deep cycle marine or Rv batteries. My load won't be that large. Lights and some electronics and maybe a tv for the most part, and the furnace when the Cubic...

Is a charger/Inverter like the Xantrex Freedom HFS the way to go?

Once I get it to Canada, add 28% exchnge on the dollar, then bend me over to pay for ship pane, and yet again for duty when it crosses the border! I will have a closer look at the magnum if Xantrex are not so hot.

Solar panels, fixed to the roof, adjustable on the roof, or portable?

By add an extra panel do you men 3, 100 watt instead of two? Flat sure would make mounting easy! Curious why some suggest going 24 Volt? When you link all the panels aren't you keeping the output 12V but increasing the amperage output?

Solar panels, fixed to the roof, adjustable on the roof, or portable?

Joe917, my unit is anFord 550 long wheel base crew cab with a 11' uhaul with a 3' overhang over the cab. It's my "Budget" Earthroamer! I have on ought room on the overhang for two 100 watt panels. I'm thinking an aluminum tilting frame that if need be I could remove and remote over if in the...

Solar panels, fixed to the roof, adjustable on the roof, or portable?

Planning for my solar install this summer. Wondering about whether I should mount them solid to the roof flat. Rig up a hinge so I can angle them when in use and flat for travel, or also have them so I can remove them and have them off to the side of the rig. I'm thinking removable might be a...

6v or 12v batteries, How many AH?

Thanks for the info. I would have to grunt the batteries into a cupboard but shouldn't have an issue. As I live in Canada we don't have Sams club. I am looking at doing a bulk shipment of parts and stuff to a border shipping outlet. Most places ship free to the Lower 48. I would make one Run for...

6v or 12v batteries, How many AH?

Building my expediiton camper and planning my electrical. Probably the biggest draw will be the furnace during cold nights when the wood stove goes out. Also planning small flat screen TV and DVD player. Few 12v LED lights plus an Inverter/charger running a couple 110V LED lights. What would be...

Is a charger/Inverter like the Xantrex Freedom HFS the way to go?

I'm building my expedition camper using a Uhaul body mounted on a lifted Ford F550. I will have two 6v house batteries and 200 watts of solar power. The Xantrex unit, although pricey, seems to be simple and can charge the batteries quickly when plugged in to an outside power source and it...

My 550 build The "Ford Escape"

The cold (-37) winter days have me thinking and planning, waiting for spring to get back to the truck. My plans are to remove the box and temporarily put it on a flat bed trailer so I can work on the Chassis and box. My chassis plans are some suspension repairs/upgrades, painting frame and cab...

Source for older Uhaul van box corner parts?

My other thought was to weld the pieces all back together if I can't find replacements or I was going to check with a truck body manufacturer in Edmonton who uses aluminum extrusions and see if they have something close I can adapt. Worse case is I build them from Aluminum. Those ones on Ebay...

Source for older Uhaul van box corner parts?

I've read here that the older aluminum Uhaul boxes were a good base for a build as there are parts readily available to repair them as they are built like a Mechano set. The box I have on my truck has rounded aluminum extrusions in the corners. Three of the four on the back are all broken in the...
