I second the driver’s side fender mount. I also second the Larson NMO 2/79B. If you don’t go with the Larson, just make sure the antenna in question is phased for 1/2 wave on VHF.

They are going for $137.95 on Ham Radio Outlet right now.

When I see them used at swaps they go for around $80. Seems like a decent ROI.

Or you can go full potato and get an Icom ID-5100A. After all, you aren’t REAL overland without one.
In all seriousness, go to a club swap meet in your area and see what is out there. Recently I knew a guy where I live that was selling a few of those Yaesu and Kenwood 2m single band radios...
Every time I order an antenna I usually just order a $5 rain cap as well and just keep it in the glove box. I have one on an NMO on my Xterra I don’t use much anymore and it never comes off. Never. No matter how hard I try. I usually have to get a crescent wrench to break it loose.
About the...
Well, there isn’t much that I can say that Dave didn’t. He did a great job.
I would add a recommendation to go to a local radio club and see if they are having a swap meet or a hamvention in the near future or just ask if anyone is selling anything. It is possible to pick up a good, used, name...
So, got it installed yet?
BTW, don’t worry about your soft top blocking your signal, that thing is invisible to RF. The frame may have a minimal effect, but not much.

You gotta dig around his site a bit. Go ahead and splurge on the N-type connecter, they have significantly less loss than SO-239 and are waterproof.

Here’s a gentleman that makes j-pole and slim-jim’s. He cuts them to GMRS.

No, it’s fine. That is the center pin for the PL-259 and the signal wire of the coax is soldered in there. It will never look perfect. Ever.
As long as there is 0 ohms from that pin and the center pin of the NMO and infinite ohms between it and the outer hacker you are fine.

That Larsen puck is the one I was referencing earlier. I was a bit mistaken as it “only” requires a 20 inch circle, not a 24 as I earlier stated.

On Midland's web site it states it is a 5/8 wave antenna, and a 5/8 wave by its nature will require a ground plane. Also, a 1/2 wave antenna (one not requiring a ground plane) will still have its RF lobes flatten out at a lower angle with a ground plane under it. A 5/8 wave antenna's wave...
You cannot go wrong with Laird antennas. Laird, PCTel and Pulse Larson are universally known for their high levels of quality and performance.
I do not know exactly who manufactures the Midland antenna, I just know they don’t build it in house.

Try looking into a 1/2 wave antenna meant to be used without ground planes. GMRS is high enough of a frequency that they are not very tall.
I have a “stealth” or “ghost” antenna on my wife’s van because it was the only one she would go for. Usually those style of antennas require larger ground...
I love the Engrish on that listing.
“This product is a new digital display using 12v delay module can be widely used in a variety of control switch position.”
“With protection against reversal diode, better protection while wrong connection.”

I was once toying with the idea of getting a UPS charge controller and a small (6Ah) LIFePO4 battery for that purpose.
I looked around a bit for a charge controller but couldn’t really find one that would work with both the vehicle’s voltage and the battery’s voltage requirements.
I do have...
Start off with Ham. Use an NMO mount for the antenna, use Anderson Power Poles for power and leave the radio in an accessible location. That way you can easily swap out the radio to whatever you need.
I have two NMO mounts on my roof and just power it with a Y-splitter I made with Anderson...
I’m just happy to see People converting from CB to, well, pretty much anything else.
I will tell you this, not to discount the merits of GMRS, (I have a license for that too) but I have never heard anyone lamenting their regrets over getting an Amateur Radio License.
I wonder if MidlandUSA...
Here are some 1/2 wave UHF antennas. Make sure to use the ones tunes for the 450-470 MHZ range, GMRS is 462 and 467.
