Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

HI Simon, hand survived, probably overused it a bit as was quite sore today, but it's getting better. The new gearbox was taller than the old, but it just clears, I had to push it forward when lifting in, then move it back into position. It has about 70mm of clearance, which is enough I...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Been a couple of big weekends working on the truck. First was to take the UG3/40 tranmission out. In order to do that, I had to take the front and rear axles off - to get enough space for the transplant. Then to take out the UG3/100 transmission, which came out quite easily, one I got...

Making Unimog meet American DOT/EPA emissions regulations?

Unimog brakes are hydraulic/air hybrid. Air line to the brake booster, but hydraulic to the brake calipers. The emergency brake is spring applied/ air release. It should be possible to convert to hydraulic setup, with a remote booster, but may require a different master cylinder given...

    Charging Both Ways

Same as Sitec, I use a small Facet pump, mine is 12V so I have a bigger choice than those with a 24V truck.

    Charging Both Ways

Facet pump will let fuel through when it is turned off, I have one on each tank which I use for bleeding ( and finding leaks) and transferring fuel between the tanks. I'd recommend getting some of them, it makes bleeding the air out of the fuel system a less than five minute job. If I do run...

Dedicated Heating / Hydronics / Diesel heating thread

I see that a lot of the northern hemisphere trucks have major heating system, including underfloor heating, multiple radiators and also small windows. I did a some calculation on heat loss based on the insulation we have and figured out I needed about 5kW @ -30C. I doubt we will be spending...

    MB Truck vs Unimog

I'd also pull the starter off and check the solenoid, it is just clicks and not turn over then its the solenoid contact, I had a one that was not set up properly and the contact got chewed out. Starter itself was fine. Files the black bits off with a steel file, (don't use sandpaper as it...

Sewing Thread....A discussion on making your own adventure textile gear.

We didn't have a problem with the motor on our Sailmate version, biggest problem was not being able to go really slowly, something the power pack is very good at from what I can see. The stock machine is pretty fast off the mark, and doesn't go slow enough for me. I would use the hand wheel...

The Sailright Ultrafeed is the same Sakura Stitch machine as the Sailright Ultrafeed. We found it great, it could stitch the heavy canvas up to six layers, provided we changed the needles often. We tested it on some thin leather, and it worked, but not saddle type leather, more upholstery leather.

Dedicated Heating / Hydronics / Diesel heating thread

I have a Webasto 90ST, and like most, run that through the engine cooling system to warm up the block, also acts as a nice heat soak to ensure the cycle times are long. I have two Kalori Silencio 2 radiators, ( 5KW each) with fans, one set of almost silent computer fans, just a vague hum, and...

    MB Truck vs Unimog

Maybe these will help - the U1300 is narrower than the U1700 by a little bit, but has a stronger but heavier chassis. Motors vary, and the you can upgrade any one that come with a turbo and the piston oil squires to about 250hp if you want to, there are kits sold by Mog Central over here...

    MB Truck vs Unimog

We drive ours at 100kph all the time on highways, if you are getting one and want to drive fast, you will need either an overdrive or high speed gears in the diff or portals. Overdrives are not being made anymore, and changing the diff or portal gearing means you will need the low...

    MB Truck vs Unimog

I did my portals 60,000km ago, and the only reason I had to change one it that the truck fell off the jack and damaged the main bearing, all the others are still good. You need good synthetic oil in them, and change it often, but there is only about 500ml in each so not a big deal. My...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

The 650C will be OK for an EGT provided the sensor is in the manifold before the turbo, after the turbo expect 100-150C lower. I've found that winding up the boost on my OM352A lowers the EGT, especially if you have an intercooler.

    MB Truck vs Unimog

I am biased, but to set the facts straight, you don't need any special tools to rebuild the portal axles other than a decent socket set and a copper hammer. I've done two sets, takes about two-three hours per wheel now.

    Cab to Camper Pass Through???

Hi never measured that, would be a good test. Currently the truck is on stands in the shed, waiting for my hand to heal before I put the new transmission in, so will be a month or more before I can do any tests.

We finally finished our truck walkaround video. Here is our finished awning. It was well worth the effort. Now to make a new spare wheel cover, and a storage bag for the awning and ground sheets.
