3 Mandatory Roof Top Tent Hacks

I may have been a RTT skeptic for a number of years in the past, but at this point I'm fully on board. We usually have one on our trailer, which is a lot more convenient than having one on your truck. But the 4Runner isn't a daily driver. While there are a lot of reasons to like a Roof Top...

Minimalist Drawer System / Sleeping Platform

I know I'll regret stapling down the carpet. On another build I just held it down with screws. It's dusty, but it vacuums out easily. -M

Minimalist Drawer System / Sleeping Platform

In some of my videos I make off hand comments about not needing recovery gear because of the Toyota. At first I didn't even mean to do it, but now it's kind of a running gag. Of course the only time the Tacoma need a winch, I had my 4Runner there to pull it out... Thanks for reading! -M

Minimalist Drawer System / Sleeping Platform

"I bought this pickup truck because I needed more space than an SUV," is what you might have heard me say about a year ago when I bought a used 2017 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab, Short bed TRD Off-Road. (DCLB TRDOR). And that's a good reason to get a midsize pickup instead of an SUV like a 4Runner...

DIY 4x4 Ambulance Overland Camper: Ford F-550 Chassis w/ 6.0 Diesel

RV Life My grandfather lived in Louisiana and for a little while he had a dolphin. One summer he drove it out to where we lived in Michegan and took us all on a big road trip. Of course, I mean the Toyota based cab over recreational vehicle, not the marine mammal. And while that RV was...

    Minimalist Overlander: 2016 Ford Expedition

We have a 2010 5.4 with all those features. It's a LOOOOOONG truck though. But if it wasn't my wife's daily driver I'd set it up for overlanding and give it a try. We actually did the Mojave road in it stock once. Did fine except when I botched shifting into 4low because I was used to driving my...

    Minimalist Overlander: 2016 Ford Expedition

A friend of mine had one in an F150 that did great unloaded, but got 8mpg towing their travel trailer. He then got a power wagon which got 8 towing and only 13 not towing. Tradeoffs? Anyway, I think the Ecoboost power band and the high gearing is what was causing Mike to stall on the hills in...

    Minimalist Overlander: 2016 Ford Expedition

In 1996 Ford killed off the last bronco. The full size, two-door beast we'd loved since the seventies, was gone. It took 24 years for them to bring it back. But in 1997 they launched the Expedition, a full-size, 4 door SUV following on from the wildly popular Explorer and taking the next step in...

Nevada Overlanding: Tunnel Camp Ghost Town to Nightengale Mine

I suppose on some elemental level, every dirt road looks about about like the next. Just an endless valley. Another scraggy mountain range with a name that only means something to the dusty pioneers who gave it. But every road leads somewhere. And this one brings us back here to Sage Valley, The...

    ARB JACK vs. Hi-Lift Jack

The Hi-Lift is designed by humans for use by humans. As such, with a human's propensity to make mistakes and fail to pay attention, it is a hazardous design. Sure, if you do everything right, no problem. Even if you discount the base design, the ARB design has less user error hazards and pinch...

    ARB JACK vs. Hi-Lift Jack

Yeah, well it does if it fits. If it doesn't fit, then it's really sketchy. But I think you're definitely right. I like the bumpers or sliders that have pockets specifically designed for a hi-lift foot. That probably makes a pretty big difference. It's true that most modern vehicles aren't...

    ARB JACK vs. Hi-Lift Jack

Yeah. I was referring to what I saw in the video. The Hi-Lift's hook will hit in different spots on different vehicles. Not everyone has the experience and familiarity with hi-lifts as some. So that's where a simpler, though limited, product is still good to have. To clarify, the ARB jack in...

    ARB JACK vs. Hi-Lift Jack

Mostly the contact point. The Hi-Lift was only contacting the hook. The ARB was contacting the the whole flat of the slider. The base also conforms to the angle of the ground on it's own.

    ARB JACK vs. Hi-Lift Jack

Last month I went out with Harry Wagner and Bradd Davidsonto test and shoot photos and video of the new ARB Hydraulic Jack for off road vehicles. I did a test of each lifting Harry’s Jeep LJ. My conclusions are that the ARB JACKis a far better and safer tool for lifting a vehicle than a Hi-Lift...
