Haven‘t checked in for awhile and wanted to post a few updates. The frame came back from the powder coater and looks great!
The powder coating shop had to add on to his oven because he’d never done anything as big as a Suburban before. 😂
I also got the first pictures from the body...
This looks amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Are there any spots a full size rig like a Suburban on 37s would have trouble fitting? Thanks again for the great report on your adventure.
So true Mike!!! That’s exactly how things happened. It would have been a shame to not go all the way at this point.
The bottom of the body is going to be rhino lined. All new body bushings. Should be as good as new if not better.
Had a tough decision to make. After talking with Matt the shop owner I inquired how far we were away from just taking the body off and doing a full frame off restoration. Matt said we weren’t that far away.
I looked at some numbers and realized that with as far as we are going with this...
Small update. The shop is doing some body work in anticipation of paint late next month. Some rust around the window channel, but typical for a 30+ year old truck.
I’m being told it’s one of the best trucks they’ve worked on in terms of how little rust it has. Finally some good news.
The 6.6 engine and 6L90E transmission have been test fit in the truck. Fits like a glove
I’m waiting to hear some numbers on paint and body. I know that number is going to hurt on something this big. ?
Off Road Design 6” lift and 37”X12.50 Yokohama Geolanders is nearly complete. Shocks will be Bilstein 5100s. Springs are custom ORD springs that should flex pretty well.
I’m hoping the rear springs settle an inch or so when I get the spare tire mounted out back and all the accessories and...
The shop just sent me some pictures today. The truck is making progress. No longer a diesel and it appears to have lost some weight.
The truck is being built by Matt and his crew at Carolina Truck Shop in Spartanburg, SC. Matt may check in here from time to time as his schedule permits.
Drivetrain came in today. Other than the shipping monkeys trying to kill it and destroying the pallet it mostly came through ok. Worst damage is a kink in the transmission pan. I was worried about the engine oil pan but the shop tells me it’s ok.
Looks like a new transmission pan is about...
I do kind of like the wheels and would consider keeping them. The trouble is they are old 16.5” wheels. That doesn’t give me many options for tires in a 16.5”.
Hello folks. I registered here a few years back and showed a couple pictures of my 91 GMC Suburban. Life got in the way and the project sort of stalled out as sometimes happens. Things are getting back on track. I just found and purchased a direct injected 6.6 gas engine and 6 speed...
Thanks! It's sort of a 3/4 ton, kinda sorta. :) It's a V1500 with axles out of a ‘78 3/4 ton pickup. So a 14 bolt rear and 10 bolt front. I'm going to see how the 10 bolt front treats me with the 37” tires. I will probably go to a Dana 60 eventually when the money tree blooms...
Thanks to some help from a friend my Dakota Digital gauges are in. He is a Blackhawk helicopter mechanic, so to him an old Suburban is easy. The original dash pad is thrashed, all bowed out and broken. I have a new dash pad inbound that will really tie things together with the new...
It’s strange how in the off roading world, some people feel independent front suspension is the devil when it’s attached to a GM truck. Yet somehow IFS takes on magical and indestructible characteristics under a Toyota or other brand. Funny how cognitive dissonance works.
Thank you sir! Hopefully if all goes according to plan I will have pictures of the new instrument cluster going in tomorrow. Got to have a working odometer to pass inspection. After that the truck will be getting rear disc brakes and I have to fix the parking brake (again that state...
‘91 V1500. It needs a lot but the build has finally gotten jump started. It’s got a 14 bolt rear and 10 bolt front out of a 3/4 ton pickup. 6.2 diesel with a Banks turbo kit just waiting to go on. Interior needs help but it’s a nearly cancer free survivor. Will ride on a 6” lift and 37s soon.
That is really frustrating when you pay for something and don't get what you are expecting. The tires I received from Feltz were as described. Lots of tread, no dry rot, and I had to look a couple times before I was able to pick out which one was the 70% tire. I'm very happy with my purchase...
