    Red's deuce camper project

It would be more complex than a shelter installed/removed from a cargo truck. The M816 has the 20k pound crane and 45k pound rear winch built into the bed. Both are powered by PTO shafts that are driven by the transfer case. The crane is hydraulic powered but the pump is attached to the bed...

    Red's deuce camper project

Initial testing with a cheap walmart hammock. Far enough from the tires/truck that it can sway some but close enough that I can easily put my hand on the tire to stop the swinging. I'm working on modifying the cargo cover so it can be setup off of the side of the truck. Normally the wrecker...

    Red's deuce camper project

Awhile ago I towed the m51 back to the lot. Front 2 tires need tubes so I decided to just lift tow the truck back. I might have the m51 sold (have a deposit, waiting for the rest of the money in a few weeks) so I'll be back to just the m816 wrecker for awhile. You can camp off of the wrecker...

    Military surplus 37X12.50r16.5 tires

I run the 37"s on my 82 k20, it's the offroad toy. Traction has been great so far on rocks, sand, and some mud. I run 25-30psi on the road and down to 12psi offroad. Had 1 tire throw a chunk very quickly on the pavement (bad tire) that was replaced no questions asked. Holds air so it became my...

    Military Surplus camper vehicles

The M809, M939 series 5 tons and LMTV have all their mechanical parts available over the counter at the heavy duty truck parts stores (peterbilt, kenworth......). They run commercial drivetrains. The cummins NHC250 is part of the N14 series engines that was used in 18 wheelers and similar...

    Red's deuce camper project

They did install multifuel engines in the 5 ton trucks for awhile, my M51a2 dump truck has that engine in it. It's a more powerful version of the engine that went in the 2.5 ton deuce. 135hp 330ft/lbs torque in the LDT multifuel deuce, 180hp roughly 400ft/lbs torque LDS multifuel in the 5 ton...

    Red's deuce camper project

The military wreckers are incredibly versatile and useful. I spent $5300 for mine when I bought it from a friend, we got it running about a week before that. This one needed quite a bit of work and still has more to come. He replaced the fuel lines, filter, rebuilt the primer pump, bought new...

    Freightliner ambulance conversion project.

Agreed, auto's are nice when they are working, cost to fix them sucks. What is the overdrive ratio of your current transmission, and do you want more of an overdrive or happy with that ratio? Reason I ask is that info will help with the search for a replacement transmission if you decide to...

    Freightliner ambulance conversion project.

What overdrive ratio do you need for your transmission? If a .78 ratio is enough look for a 5 speed manual transmission from a older military 5 ton truck (M54, 52, 51, M813, 818...) It's a Spicer 6453, can buy them in good condition for less than $1,000. They have an SAE #2 bellhousing.

    Red's deuce camper project

Bought it for cheap. Body is in better shape than the picture shows, they used a dark brown primer on the dump bed. In need of batteries, cab top, starter, tires, and a paint job. Has the more powerful multifuel engine and 5 speed manual, power steering, stronger brakes, and a 20k winch up...

    Red's deuce camper project

Eh, I've never been too concerned about neighbors opinions. US was founded as a free country, people do what they like, I do what I like. I ended up parting out the deuce, made more money than I had into it. Did the math and it would cost me much more to build the deuce exactly how I wanted...

    Red's deuce camper project

The frame on these trucks are the standard commercial medium and heavy duty design. Straight frame rails that are 34 inches wide. So swapping bodies or drive trains is about as simple as it gets. Even with the DT466 stock it's still an increase of 50 hp and 220+ ft/lbs of torque, nearly double...

My favorite is the RTOO9513 with its .65 final overdrive. Temporarily I will most likely be running a Spicer 6453 from the older military 5 ton trucks. Same gear ratios as my old transmission, but will handle the torque of the DT466. And it's cheap haha. Sent from my XT1096 using Tapatalk

Been productive the last 2 weeks. Towed the deuce to a closer location where the M816 wrecker can be used to pull the old engine and transmission out of the deuce.

    Red's deuce camper project

Not yet, money has been too tight. There are a bunch of the Spicer 6453 transmissions (5 ton manual) that are up for sale in a few weeks. If I don't find a 10+ speed before then I will pick one of those up. It's not ideal since its a 5 speed and the same .79 overdrive ratio, but will work and...

It needs a bath and paint job. Engine turns over fine, no known mechanical issues.

The DT466 engine is sitting in the garage for now. Want to clean it up and change a few gaskets before it goes in.
