Power Needed to Drag a Trailer Through the Backcountry

That engine IS thirsty - thanks for the idea.

Power Needed to Drag a Trailer Through the Backcountry

That's the thing. Since I've never had 4wd on this vehicle I have no idea how much of a difference it would make.

Yes, load up that OBI dweller with full tanks, and if I have my figures right - you're getting pretty close to payload. That's a good figure - 8.3 lbs/gal - to keep in mind.

Right, there's this heavier load/bigger engine/increased efficiency thing. I've heard that before. Elevation really isn't an issue for me.

It's the 6l80E The new gas engine (2021) is the 6.6L; they no longer offer the 6.6 duramax - every once in a while they do show up used. That would definitely fix any torque questions.

Thanks. I like the Transit a lot but tow capacity was holding me back. I will check out those trailers.

Thanks for the tip....Not a great time to buy anything.

The gassers are sticking with the 6spd for now; the baby diesel has the 8 I believe. Steeper gears are a possibility. I see that Timberline will put some in. Not sure about tires. Even the extended van has done pretty good. I did thump a transmission pan that had to be replaced but it has...

My worry about the Basecamp too. It looks really well built but not necessarily for offroad. They don't mention axle or hitch.

Agreed about the van. I would go pickup if I could but the van, despite its considerable limitations, unfortunately, must stay. I would love, love, love to try out that 3.0L duramax :)

Tranny and engine are actually in great shape. None of the v-8's have good mpg but the 6.6 with its direct injection should add a couple of mpg.

Thanks for the ideas. Yes, RKS is expensive....Boreas is too expensive but I didn't know about the others. I will check out Trail Markup as well

Power Needed to Drag a Trailer Through the Backcountry

Thanks. One of my big questions. The gearing is 3.42 - very low on grunt I take it. Pretty good at higher speeds but not from standing still. I was thinking of 4HI/4L0 4wd possibly with a locker. Maybe re-gearing will be necessary. I'll have to check out options.

First U.S. Spec Kimberley T3 Kruiser Ready to Roam

T Congratulations. These are such beautiful trailers. They have so much - all that solar, all those batteries, composting toilet, filtered water and gorgeous design....They are the pinnacle of trailer making. I hope you enjoy it a lot and keep us posted how it goes. :) Would love to hear about...

Power Needed to Drag a Trailer Through the Backcountry

I know! It's all about real world experience. A dealer told me of a guy who brought a brand new Tundra and was miserable trying to tow a HQ19 despite the fact that it was well under its towing capacity. That kind of scared the crap out of me :) The 200K van will, somewhat sadly, be gone. It'll...

Power Needed to Drag a Trailer Through the Backcountry

Thanks. That's been my suspicion. My guess is that I want to go at least a couple of thousand pounds below towing capacity.

Power Needed to Drag a Trailer Through the Backcountry

As per my partners wishes - make that demands - it's got to have an interior shower and toilet. We don't want anything much over 5K weight and lighter is better. I was strongly encouraged by a dealer not to try to drag any trailer that weighs 6K or more through the backcountry with that van...
