I have 4. From Arkansas, Oregon, Arizona and the OB. In each case the Jeep was caked with mud, snow or sand and over 1000 miles from its FL home.
But yes, the trend has turned from a well built Jeep doing tough trails or overlanding and far from home to mall crawlers exchanging ducks.
The rubicon has stronger axles. Front and rear lockers, electric front sway bar disconnects and a 4:1 low range vice 2.73:1. Unless you are going to replace everything and do an extreme build the rubicon is the most capable stock 4wd available.
Well done! Similar to what I do but I have a 4” drawer system that stays in all the time in the cargo area.
I also found a water tank that fits perfectly in the passenger rear footwell, 13 gallons and use an rv water pump. They make a smaller 7 gallon one also.
Great niche bike and regardless of what some have said here the TW will go places none of these other bikes will go. It is the atv of motorcycles. The front tire is dirt bike rear tire width and the rear can actually use ATV tires. It has a lower seat height than anything mentioned here, is dead...
Interesting thread, not much to add but I do have a question as I have looked into propane water heaters also. Most of the ones I checked out had an altitude limit (10000 feet??? IIRC).
How do you folks deal with that? Is it not a thing in reality or do you rejet or change an orifice?
My next obstacle was white rim road. I almost canceled due to heavy winds and rain but I pushed through it. I did it ccw from mineral bottom road. The mineral switchbacks and hard scrabble hill were tense for me in the rain and mud but I pushed through. Stressful but a once in a lifetime trip...
As rusty said no two tat trips are alike. You can do almost everything in the jeep. My last run towards the coast in Oregon I was dragging my bike under and around trees and landslides that you couldn’t do in a jeep. I doubt Andy 4 wheels vehicle had been down those roads in years as others on...
Depends on how adventurous you will be. Traveling solo I would recommend them as you can’t always avoid deep snow or deep mud! Depends where you go!

I have done it 1-3/4s times on my bikes. It was fun but on the last full one it was over 100 from western Arkansas through the desert in Oregon with a brief weather break in co mountains. Wore me out.
I love off roading on a motorcycle but at this point in my life (64) I don’t think I could...
Day eight Montrose to Moab via rimrocker 167 miles. After two nights in Montrose I got to something I have wanted to do since they created it
Rimrocker is a 160 mile trail going up the mesas. It is made from a series of old mining and forest roads. It got its name from the uranium yellow cake...
Day 6 continued.
I half heartedly had hopes of doing a few easy passes from lake city which I had stopped at for lunch. The town is seriously rolled up for the winter. It was freezing rain so I skipped the passes (did many of them on the dirt bike TAT). The brewery doesn’t even open til 4. It...
