Longterm review of the 3rd Gen 4Runner

Who knew that 3rd gens would become an appreciating asset. I bought mine for $8200 w/ 84k miles and it is likely worth 2x+ that now, crazy.

Longterm review of the 3rd Gen 4Runner

A high school friend's parents had a 3rd gen, and I always really liked that truck and wanted to own one. After wheeling a Jeep for many years I eventually got jealous of paddlenbike's 4Runner when we went on trips, and bought my own 5spd in 2009. This truck has been incredibly reliable over...

    Thin LiFePO4 Batteries

https://batteryhookup.com/products/new-12v-100ah-lifepo4-kit-w-bms-low-temp These are 3" thick, but if you reconfigured the cell layout you could make them about 1.5" tall.

DIY camp kitchen kit from Pelican 1560 (pics and a question)

A high quality double side tape like VHB from 3M would likely hold up well in that use. Are the dividers coroplast covered with thin closed cell foam? Looks good

Anderson Connectors - seem to be having issues?

I had a similar issue with Anderson connectors not seating properly and disconnecting due to vibration. This was because I initially tried to install them using a standard crimp tool, and then later by soldering the pins onto the wire. In both cases the body of the pin was not the proper shape...

Have you made your own DIY propane hose for a camp stove?

Coincidentally I've been looking for something similar to replace the rigid regulator on my Camp Chef Everest stove. Currently the propane bottle hangs off of the rigid regulator, and I'm worried it is going to bend the attachment point at the stove. I've been considering cutting the rigid pipe...

    Winches and circuit breakers/fuses/disconnects

I've had a 300A fuse on the positive wire for my winch for several years. The wire is protected anywhere it is near metal, but with the vibrations from driving offroad there's still the possibility of it wearing through at some point. The fuse is cheap protection.

Water Crossing with a Mechanical Fan?

A friend of mine has broken multiple blades of his electric fan (several different times) during water crossings, while the rest of the group's mechanical fans have had no issues. He eventually re-installed the manual fan and has not had a problem since then. This isn't to say that mechanical...

GX470 Unsprung weight grenading rear diff

I've always wondered why the GX470 forums report "a ton" of broken rear differentials, but you don't hear the same thing from 4th gen 4Runners or FJCs which run the same 120 platform. Obviously the GX470 is heavier and the V8 has more torque, but people put add a lot of weight to their 4Runners...

    Water Storage for a 5th Generation 4Runner

I really like that mini table that deploys from under your fridge, great idea.

3rd gen 4 runner rear springs

I originally used FJ80 springs from a Sonoran Steel 1.2 lift, but they were tool tall for my use. I now have a set of the shorter Toytech Superlift coils and like them.

    Options for flat-sided storage boxes?

I use a similar folding crate for dry goods storage. I bought it at Costco and built my own lid since it didn't come with one. This has lived in the back of my truck for about a year, been on multiple trips, and has held up well. http://www.blankwhitepage.com/gallery/camp_kitchen/IMG_1008

Small Anderson connectors - is there a trick I'm missing?

What type of crimp tool are you using? The small Anderson connectors are widely used in ham radio and in my experience it really helps to use the crimp tool specific to these connectors. When I've used a standard crimp tool the wire either was not solidly connected (as you experienced), or the...

    Let's talk about buckets

After camping with a cheap 12" plastic bucket for years this thread made me think it might be time to upgrade. My only complaint with the bucket is that it takes up a lot of space in the truck and doesn't pack well since it is round. Thinking about it a bit more I realized that the issue is...

    Let's talk about buckets

We use a cheap plastic bucket that goes under the faucet of our water tank. It catches the grey water when people wash their hands, which we then use to put out the fire. Since this bucket is round it doesn't pack very well, and I'm really liking the idea of using a cat litter bucket. Thanks for...

    Edgestar FP630

My assumption is that the compressor runs on DC, so the AC side input through a transformer and then is rectified to DC. This means that if it works on AC it should work on DC as well, which suggests an "upstream" problem somewhere between the plug and the circuit board or a low voltage issue...

Securing "overlanding" goodies while on the road

On my trucks I've always stored everything inside the vehicle. This lowers wind resistance, keeps the COG low, prevents damage from weather, and helps deter potential thieves. If I spend the night at a motel while in transit, or leave the vehicle unattended all day while hiking (or even parked...

    Air chuck/inflators with accurate gauge

In my opinion precision is more important than accuracy. As long as I can get repeatable results, then I'm not too concerned if the gauge is 100% accurate. Interestingly, the accuracy of many dial gauges is specified as "±3-2-3%" (Class B) which indicates that the middle 1/2 of the range is...
