Adrift and its builders got some good press after OX West! Can't argue with any of the authors assertions having finally seen this thing in person. Simply amazing.
From newatlas.com author C.C. Weiss:
Adrift away
We generally spend most of our time at OX West checking out the wares being...
You've got a good plan I think. The thing to watch once you get up and running will be weather the Redarc pushes the batteries up to 14.5v every morning even though they are full (and resting at around 13.6v after sitting without load or charge overnight). Your Victron monitors will let you know...
That's really interesting info Rando, thanks for sharing. I think this suggests that lots of different vehicles will behave differently in charging house Li batteries. Sounds like your vehicle is really playing well with your house batteries. What vehicle is it?
For me (2010 Nissan Frontier)...
There are at least a couple problems using an SI-ACR (and other regular battery combiners) with Li house batteries.
1) Keeping the Li connected to the starter battery/alternator when ever the vehicle is running will lead to overcharging of the Li battery. You need to be able to disconnect from...
[DiploStrat posted while I was typing - sorry for the redundancy]
Following along and looking forward to hearing your experiences with this approach. Couple comments:
- If you don't need the house batteries while in furniture hauling mode, you might consider just discharging the batteries to...
Okay, worked on a few projects before heading out to Expo that should be reported.
Of minor interest, I finally got the last bit of seal done between the main body and the slide up:
More of the brush seal but in this case it had to be hinged to clear part of the camper when in the...
Hey Bevan (sorry, been spelling your name wrong here:oops:)
Thanks for the history and broader perspective on the DIY area. I hope my off-the-cuff comments and observations didn't come across as in any way being critical of your efforts - getting a dedicated DIY area going is a HUGE positive...
Yeah, they did not promote the DIY area much, if at all. I wouldn't have known about it either except they asked us to join the area after we put in an application to be a "featured" vehicle.
I think an area with DIY rigs on display integrated with some of the vendors who cater to the DIY crowd...
Yeah, wish you could have too, would be great to see your rig in person - maybe next year if they do DIY again?
I hope they do it again and I hope they do a better job with some aspects of it. We were kind of off in the forest without any signs pointing our way and pretty isolated from the main...
Well, we did Expo 2018 in the all new DIY section. Overall, Expo has grown a bit since we last attended in 2012 (understatement of the year!).
- Saw enough converted Sprinters to fill a lifetime. Still like them though.
- Maltec campers from Germany look simply great.
- Enjoyed some good...
Oh boy, hectic week, packing up and getting some last little things done before heading to Expo! Hope to see some of you there. We'll be in the DIY "Area 2". Long drive tomorrow, early start, should be asleep already...
Man, looking great! Congratulations on the test drive - that's a big moment!
What's your approach to getting graphics done? I've been thinking large vinyl stickers from a local print shop but have no clue if that is a good approach or not.
Pretty much everything inside and out was made with 1-inch thick panels. They seem to be plenty rigid for my design and offer a little bit of insulation. If I was making a big full size camper I'd go at least twice as thick for the outside walls and roof though.
The bed platform is the only...
Yeah, for sure. Just talked through travel logistics with Sheri, she has Wednesday stuff to do so looks like we'll drive all the way out Thursday. We'll break the return trip up and camp somewhere Sunday night though, no ideas yet on where.
Thanks! Yeah, shower pan was built from scratch. I did look around for off-the-shelf units but I had strict size requirements and quickly settled on doing it myself. I just did one layer of 8 oz fiberglass/epoxy over plywood. Sanding, fairing, sanding, primer and boat paint. Teak grate was a...
Been getting a little work done on the camper...
Shower is coming along. Glued in some guides to keep the teak grate in position and got a couple coats of paint on it.
Grate in position. Just fits under the trap door. Grate comes right out to use for outdoor shower option as well.
Next up...
Whew, lively thread! Question for the OP if you're still watching: Have you done any research on an easy way to disable the "smart" part of your alternator?
I have a 2010 Nissan Frontier and I was able to pull a fuse in the fuse box under the hood (labeled Horn/Alt, 20A IIRC) and this turned my...
Continued great work! Clever design on the table/bed support.
Did you buy the stairs or make them? Super cool design. Might be exactly what I'm looking for. Any leads on where to get one, cost, etc. greatly appreciated!
Got another trip in up a Mammoth a few weeks ago. Three days of good snow and some more cold nights in the camper. Everything worked as expected. Roof lifters held about three inches of wet snow without coming down. Slept with the new braces in place though and felt nice and safe.
