    Vehicle Cabinetry Construction Materials

There two products that might be helpful. Both are commonly used in the sign industry. One is Dibond, and it's many variants. Dibond is solid plastic core with aluminum on both sides. It is very easy to cut, and has the advantage that the edges can be smoothed. It can also be formed. The...

D rated options in the venerable 255/85-16

The problem with most of the options I have found is that they end up weighing as much or more than what I already run.

D rated options in the venerable 255/85-16

It's that time again to start thinking about new tires for my Gen 2 Tacoma, and this time I'm really hoping to land on the perfect compromise. I've experimented with a number of tire sizes, load ratings, and casing designs. My current tires are the Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx in LR-E. The...

    Colorado trip - gearing questions

Well, altitude is going to slow you down and force you into lower transmission gears. No way around that. I don't know that lower axle gears would really matter much. You will still have to find the final ratio that allows you to keep going. Pack as light as you can, and just let the truck...

    DIY "Move Bumpers"

These kits are CNC cut so the fit should be perfect if properly assembled. These things do require a competent welder. Welding creates a good deal of distortion in metal, and a skilled welder will know how to mitigate that problem. I would not attempt this project unless you understand this...

Colorado - full locking dif vs. auto locking dif

This exactly ^^^. It is the unintended locking that is the problem. If you lack experience, then get it. Find a good mentor or take a class to start. Don't rely on auto systems to do your thinking. You will rarely need the lockers, but they are nice to have! Another instance where positive...

The Wescott's Turtle III On-board Fire Extinguisher

Yes, but sodium bicarbonate is abrasive. If incorporated into an automatic system, it could get sucked into the engine intake if any part of that system melts. It is certainly not harmless. I don't know specifically what damage that might do, but I sure don't want to find out. It's bad...

The Wescott's Turtle III On-board Fire Extinguisher

Be aware that dry chemical extinguishers like the fire ball can cause a good deal of collateral damage to an engine and electronics. If the ball bursts on a running engine, the abrasive dust can be sucked into the intake. The powder is also corrosive to electrical components. Bad news. Good...

Seitz Windows 101: Pros, Cons and their Operation

I'm always puzzled about the concern for scratching with acrylic windows. We really have not found it to be an issue. Not one customer has had to replace a glazing due to unresolved scratches. Most people are far more concerned about scratching their paint. 99% of the scratches you might get...

    CUV / Crossover with 4Lo

I owned a 1982 Subaru with low range and it was fantastic offroad. I could get down almost every road my buddy's F250 could get down, UNLESS he was leading and tore the hell out of the road. I also owned a 2002 Grand Vitara V6 with LR, and it was also great offroad. Both had mechanical shift...

    Lithium Batteries

Boy, that is a wide open question. A lot depends on what your intended use is, how you plan to charge it, and all sorts of things. Your question is like asking "what's the best truck". Also, this section of the forum is a better resource for power specific questions...

    Inexpensive Plasma cutters? Any good?

I don't know about that machine, but I do currently have a Harbor Freight machine that works very well. I also have a very expensive Thermal Dynamics machine. I use the HF machine more because the cost of consumables is very low. This is something you need to check carefully when considering...

How are those newer Tacos working out?

It's probably my own particular mental illness. I don't want the truck doing things that I don't initiate. I don't want a nanny truck either. I appreciate real goods, like a strong torquey engine, a perfectly matched transmission, tuned suspension. I've gone to great expense of time and...

How are those newer Tacos working out?

Most of what you dislike can be defeated if you search out the means. The later the model year, the more work you will have to do. There is nothing newer than my truck that I would spend the money on. Instead of building in real improvements in recent years, they load up the newer models with...

How are those newer Tacos working out?

I have defeated all of the buzzers and alarms in my 2007 Gen 2. I also have a dedicated 3" non-retracting lap belt to keep me secure when offroad. I only use the OEM harness for street driving. My ABS is also disabled.

    Safe Jack

I stumbled onto this company and thought I would share. They have some interesting designs for jacks, jack stands, wheel chocks, etc. Their Hi-Lift Jack stabilizer is a simple jack base with cables to prevent side sway. I'm going to make a longer version of this for my shop if nothing else...

    Overland Journal AT Tire Test

One of the reasons we support the Expedition Portal and Overland Journal, is the quality of content. I urge people to search the editorial sections, because there is a gold mine of high quality information there! Sometimes it takes a bit of searching, but that is where I spend a good deal of...

    Gear Ratios

The amount of ground clearance you need is dependent on the trails you run. It is true that many people way over estimate what they need, and sacrifice off camber stability and other virtues in the trade. That said, gaining a couple of inches over stock definitely does make a difference in the...

    Gear Ratios

Nomenclature in this thread seems to be sideways too. Tall gears, AKA high gears = low numerical gearing. Ex: 3.73:1 is taller / higher than 4.56:1 Short gears, AKA low gears = high numerical gearing. Ex: 4.56:1 is shorter / lower than 3.73:1 I agree with everything Dave said. With...
