DIY- motorcycle chain Jerry-can locking mount

So I've just copied and pasted this from my build thread. - My bumper and Jerry-can mounting system is kind of unique, but the use of a motorcycle chain to secure a Jerry can might be applicable to other's builds. I didn't find anything anywhere on it when I was in the Google phase, so I...

    Building La Tortuga: 1983 Ford-Collins E350 4x4 ShortBus

Ok, so I basically finished up the front bumper, still need to wire in my headlights, adjust and set them, and spool my winch cable. - Got the headlights painted, soldered to a harness plug, and mounted. Also put some texture skateboard tape on top of the headlight guards. - - I cut and...

Pics of your VAN! Post up!

Looks great. What did it cost you to have your alloys powder coated? Was the coater in Durango or Farmington? I'm just curious, I can DIY powder coat but thinking it might be smarter and quicker to just hire it out, my oven barely fits a single wheel.

    Building La Tortuga: 1983 Ford-Collins E350 4x4 ShortBus

Thanks a lot. I think it looks pretty goofy (the bumper) without the headlights and the Jerry cans installed, but once it all comes together it will make more sense and be more pleasing to the eye.

    Building La Tortuga: 1983 Ford-Collins E350 4x4 ShortBus

My real hobby is collecting hobbies. It's bad enough buying a second vehicle that needs lots of attention, but it makes it awfully hard to ever lay hands (or spend dollars on) on my gunsmithing, silversmithing, electroplating, Cerekoting, powdercoating, reloading, sandcasting, Ham radio...

    FOUND Vans For Sale!

I'm with you- we're all (mostly) on the same page, I really was just trying to play peacemaker a bit, I didn't read your post as harshly as Excurgin did and just meant to add some perspective. an Ad's title is the most critical element and I try to include as many correct key words as possible...

    FOUND Vans For Sale!

Yeah, you could take it as snooty (maybe could have been worded better) but those looking for a diesel 4x4 van would have never seen your ad and I read Scotty's post with a little bit more productive and helpful tone to it.

    FOUND Vans For Sale!

Man, double bummer, both of them:eek: - I really wanted Lucinda bad for my kid's first car, but reality and logic won the battle in my brain. Check out my build thread for a glimps of what we ended up buying instead (more in line with my budget) if you're interested. - I hope all is well with...

    Building La Tortuga: 1983 Ford-Collins E350 4x4 ShortBus

OOPS, I did it again! - So I've not exactly been lighting the world on fire with the pace of this van build. More time and money is obviously needed, and I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing I had more of each. Fortunately, 9 months in my passion for this project is still as strong as ever, and I'm...

    Building La Tortuga: 1983 Ford-Collins E350 4x4 ShortBus

I also wired up my winch which turned out to be a bigger chore than I anticipated. The pelican box idea turned out great in my opinion, and even better due to the rubber firewall grommets I used to seal the box. Again, I used brown heatshrink on the exterior cables, most just for aesthetics...

    Building La Tortuga: 1983 Ford-Collins E350 4x4 ShortBus

Snowplow headlights installed just to show what they'll look like when done, these have been painted OD green and I'm re-wiring them. - I purchased a couple of folding steps, I actually have a bunch of them and will using them to create a ladder to access the roof of the van- I like this idea...

    Building La Tortuga: 1983 Ford-Collins E350 4x4 ShortBus

Man, this bumper is taking a lot longer than I thought it was going to.....:Wow1: Got the headlight mounts completed last weekend, my kid's welding is getting better, but he only get's to do the spots that are going to be grinded flush.

Anyone have a Ramsey 15k winch? Please help.

Got it wired up. Works great. I had purchased triple-ought (000) wire, but that stuff is just rediculously huge, went with 2 guage. pelican box worked out great in my opinion, especially with the rubber firewall grommets. FWIW, the two guage wire is about 1/2" diameter, and those are 1/2"...

Not So Subtle E350 Shuttle - 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed

Wow, So awesome! My wife just purchased a very fancy camera that I have not given much consideration to. I am definitely going to learn how to do this (at least in theory, if not at a varsity level) and work on some pics of my homestead property. The stars up there look like that with the naked...

Anyone have a Ramsey 15k winch? Please help.

Thanks, but I think I solved the problem by just pulling my head out for my butt. :ugh: gonna wire it up this weekend so we'll see. I like the Ramsey's and have another 8000# that I got in similarly used ugly condition and for the same price (free-ninety-free). We use them a bunch in the...

    Lucinda Build

Such a bummer, but it at least I can move on with my own life. I've literally lost sleep over the past couple of weeks contemplating buying this van from you and the troubles it would cause me. - If the new owner is on the forum, PM me if you ever decide to sell her, I may be more ready then...

    Building La Tortuga: 1983 Ford-Collins E350 4x4 ShortBus

I think I've come up with a viable solution to securing these Jerry cans down to the bumper that gives me some flexibility but also keeps my cans snug and secure. ` ` ` I had been leaning towards using these (or some similar) which are basically a ratchet strap with hardened steel cables...

    Building La Tortuga: 1983 Ford-Collins E350 4x4 ShortBus

Thanks for the kind words guys. ` ` Collins is a school bus-making company that still produces bus conversions today (or at least very recently). I've come to understand that the 4x4 conversion was subcontracted to Pathfinder which was the UJOR or Quigley of it's day (in the 1980s). I don't...

Anyone have a Ramsey 15k winch? Please help.

Thanks, yeah, I've found manuals for other winches that have been a little helpful. I've come to think it's much worry over nothing. Positive wire and negative wire go to motor to run it- solenoid box simply routes positive telling motor which way to turn or to stay off. It does not make sense...

    Building La Tortuga: 1983 Ford-Collins E350 4x4 ShortBus

I also started into mounting up my winch, this includes divorcing the solenoid box from the winch body. Again, I think there may be a tid-bit or two in this build that some other guy may find useful or insightful for a similar build. I happened to have an extra Pelican box that works perfectly...
