Portrait Shots (show us your best)

One last camping trip with friends to say so long to the summer. Take one part campfire, one part watery cave, one part ukulele jamming, and one part swimming in our underwear, at 2 in the morning under a stary sky,...can someone say photo op! LOL Tight squeeze.

Cheers guys. Pat, I totally know what ya mean, been there. This is Georgian Bay at sunrise,... which is a bit less spooky. Charlie, love the layers.

Interesting reaction Pat, not something I thought the image would evoke. Kinda cool non the less.

    Very first landscape shot with the D800. 14-24mm @ 14mm, F11, ISO 100, 1/6th of a sec, no filters.

    Nikon D800

Nice shots guys. Had another wedding this weekend in which I incorporated some video. I haven't got around to grading it yet but I thought I'd share the profile I used. Some more advanced HDSLR shooters are probably familiar with Simalaar's custom flaat profiles. Much like Technicolors...

    Nikon D800

Update Next week will be my first landscape outing with the D800 and 14-24mm combo so I am putting this setup through the paces now to see what it can do with respects to dynamic range and resolution for landscape. Pretty solid stuff I must say! Here is a very tough test I setup today and...

Staying Ahead and Getting Behind (Kirk Tuck)

I largely agree with the sentiment of the article, however I'll play devils advocate here and start by saying that digital has made monster strides and improvements since the first commercially available cameras hit the market just over 12 years ago, so upgrades have made sense for those...

    Nikon D800

LOL, beh, don't underestimate yourself, your photo-**** is strong. Thanks buddy! It really does. I think of myself as a pretty solid shooter but even I had to slow down, take my time, and I found myself consciously paying a lot more attention to things like my grip and how I was holding the...

    Nikon D800

After acquainting myself with the camera for a month I finally did my first wedding exclusively with the D800,...and I have to say it's a beast of a camera. It truly is like nothing I've used before. Dynamic range and detail really are unbelievable, and file sizes really are enormous, like 70...

    best features in Photoshop CS6

Photoshop just makes it faster, but photographers have been pushing the limits of the medium long before Photoshop arrived on scene. Case in point, this is Jerry Uelsmann's darkroom work that spans decades. I don't use Photoshop, but have no problem with those who do. At the end of...

Perfect example! I usually run a calibration on my monitor about once month, and you'd be surprised at how much they can drift month to month. Brightness and contrast are usually the two biggest drifters.

Colour management simply ensures you are getting the results you're actually after. An uncalibrated monitor for instance may have a magenta or some other hue to it that is unbenounced to the photographer working on the image, brightness and contrast can be off as well, there's all sorts of...

Get that workflow colour managed Brad, otherwise everything you do post capture pretty much becomes a guess.

Brad they look good, maybe a touch heavy on the contrast and saturation but certainly more than ok for general snaps. Are you using a colour managed workflow? If so it might be worth your time to create a custom profile for your camera, or a number of them based around certain, common...

    Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR with a teleconverter

You can get usable results with the 1.7 and 2.0, biggest problem for most people is the light loss and impact on AF performance. With the 2.0 for instance you loose two full stops, so 200mm 2.8 becomes a 400mm 5.6. That can give your cameras AF a workout in lower light conditions, not to...

    Photo Critiqing Thread

Simple answer to your question Clark, is the light is poop. It's too harsh. There are shadows running everywhere in a couple of those, which creates distracting lines. You had the right idea by putting her in the shade in your second shot, it's softer light, without the harsh shadows, but next...

    Lense quandary Zoom Vs Wide

With respects to the OP's question, personally, I'd skip out on the super zoom and go for the Tokina now. The Tokina is wicked good on cropped bodies, and built like a little tank. It's probably the best ultra wide angle lens available for DX,...that or the Sigma 8-16mm which also gets stellar...
