I know they are not, but from the perspective of transmission performance and braking, they are. Or at least they are close enough to say that, if the brakes and transmission are capable of handling much more than 2000# when towing, then they will be capable when hauling 2000#. Explain how...
It sounds like both the OP and myself are considering living in the camper full time. In my case, it's really more of an extended (multi month) trip, that may or may not turn into longer term living. During that time (during the trip), I wouldn't be removing the camper. But that might not...
A weight distribution hitch is not required to tow 2000#. Not even close. My point here was just with respect to brakes and transmission. I don't think braking or stopping distance is a factor with respect to hauling 2000# in a half ton truck because the brakes are designed to handle towing...
Definitely understood. In my case, I don't want to deal with a setup that is unsafe or doesn't ride well.
With respect to the engine power, transmission, and brakes, an F150 (which I have) or Tundra (which the OP is considering) should be fine hauling 2000# because these trucks are rated to...
And if the truck can handle the weight safely, rides well, etc., then why shouldn't he?
I'm not saying that it can handle the weight safely, that's why I'm asking my questions and sharing what I've learned. But installers and folks who are currently carrying pop up campers on half ton trucks...
Actually, you can make your payload larger by removing parts (weight) from your vehicle. And it works the other way around, if you add parts to your vehicle (after market bumpers, winches, etc) that's taking away from your payload. My truck without the FX4 package (which adds a hundred pounds...
Personally, I'm following common sense by researching this topic before I buy anything. And I'm sharing what I'm learning here on this thread because the OP and myself are asking similar questions.
Common sense says that vehicle outfitters and camper manufacturers that have been installing...
Just heard back. The insurance company considers anything less than 10,000 # to be a non-commercial vehicle. They said there is nothing specific regarding the weight of the vehicle (or being over weight) and liability or lack of coverage for non-commercial vehicles in the event of an accident...
I think the information regarding insurance liability, criminal negligence, etc. given above is not correct. I have a call into my insurance company right now. I will let you all know what they come back with. He is checking with the underwriting team now, but he said he has never heard...
The problem with Tundras is their payload. Not a heavy duty truck if you're looking for something that will haul a slide in camper.
I know the OP isn't looking for a slide in, just bringing it up to point out that Toyotas can't do it all. It would be nice to have a HD version of the Tundra.
Thanks, I'll look into this. I never heard of a tax benefit from at trade in. I'm in Colorado, I'll look into it.
The only problem is that it's very hard to find a good, used F250 or other 3/4 ton truck right now. I may do something like order the camper - there's a 12-14 month build time...
I like pan seared steak or fish. Tuna steaks are great, and filet mignon for the steak. I used a cast iron skillet on a coleman two burner stove.
Add pasta and/or vegetables cooked in a second pan to round out the meal.
I few other things to add...
I looked at the axle rating and my rear axle is rated to 3800# and the front is something like 3550. So I would probably be over the GAWR - which also is not ideal. I think it's more problematic that I have a 5.5' bed because it means that much more weight will be...
I’m in the same boat as you, except I already have my truck - 2019 F150 with the Fx4 package (“off road”) and the 5.0L V8. Crew cab and 5.5’ bed.
GVWR is 7000# and my truck weighs around 5300-5400 with a full tank of gas. So the payload is 1600-1700#. Sticker on the door says 1621#.
I wish I...
